'INVASION' NOTES: CLETO REYES, MARQUEZ, ALJOE, LIGAS ETC By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 06 Apr 2008 MANILA--Cleto Reyes, the Mexico-made "punchers' gloves", will be the gloves of choice for the big bouts of today's "Invasion" card. WBO champ Gerry Penalosa and Thailand's Ratanachai Vorapin will be using the gloves, as well as the other championship bouts. ***** As of yesterday, all premium tickets are virtually gone, with only the lower priced tickets in the general admission remaining, although this morning's surge of fans should take care of that. I tried to buy two Ringside tickets for my brother and nephew, but was told by the girl on the window nothing was left of them. So I got the tickets priced at P1050 each instead. ***** Juan Manuel Marquez, the legendary Mexican fighter, is set to arrive in the country today on the same PAL flight that Freddie Roach will be taking from Los Angeles. Some wonder if Freddie and JM Marquez would be on speaking terms during the flight. And even more wonder if the Mexican ex-champ would be seated next to Pacquiao this morning at the Araneta Coliseum. ***** At the rate ABS-CBN has been running this event, the television giant confirms its position as the undisputed leader in putting up boxing events. Almost everyone I've talked to says they've heard of the event ever since two weeks ago. The non-stop television plugs, the newspaper ads and releases as well as those Wowowee appearances have really done tremendous wonders for this show. ***** Boxing judge William "Bill" Lerch, who jetted in from the US last Friday, is a big Barack Obama fan, and said the young candidate should be the next US president. "America, I think, is almost ready for a black president," chimes in Dr. Ed De la Vega, who was on the same PAL flight from Los Angeles with Lerch. ***** Golden Boy Promotions' press relations top honcho Ramiro Gonzalez, a former topnotch boxing writer for La Opinion, revealed in an interview that if Penalosa wins today's fight, and if Daniel Ponce De Leon survives Juan Manuel Lopez, a rematch might just end up here in the country. Now, that should be huge. ***** Aljoe Jaro, the youthful manager of Bernabe Concepcion, says that if his ward comes out victorious over Torrence Daniels in Mexico on April 26, the plan is to pit him against the winner of the Steve Molitor-Fernando Beltran Jr IBF bout set today in Canada. ***** Urban poor leader Edward Ligas, who is a topnotch boxing judge as well, has been getting his fair share of popularity here, as his new boxing program over DYHP every Sunday, from 6:30 to 7:30PM, is also being heard in some parts of Luzon. Of course, the DYHP boxing program, supported by Auto Solutions maker of Sunriser Motorcyles, is also all over Mindanao and the Visayas.
