WILL FRAZER CLARKE BE THE BOXING STAR OF TOKYO 2021?

PhilBoxing.com

Rio 2016 Boxing Test Event Ceremony (AIBA).

The summer Olympics usually provides us with the chance to run the rule over some up and coming amateur boxers. Many of the world’s best have progressed through the amateur ranks to claim Olympic gold with the great Muhammad Ali at the pinnacle of that particular list.

In Tokyo in 2021, there will be some focus on a fighter at a rather more advanced stage of his personal career. Britain’s Frazer Clarke will celebrate his 30th birthday before the games come to an end and a gold medal would be the perfect way to put the icing on that birthday cake.

An Olympic Debut

Despite his advancing years, Frazer ‘The Eraser’ Clarke will be competing in his first ever Olympics when he steps into the ring in Tokyo. In 2016, he was overlooked for selection as the team headed to Rio in favour of Joe Joyce. The selection committee arguably got that one right as Joyce went on to claim the silver medal. This time around, Clarke is hitting his peak and is rightly on the plane to contest the Super Heavyweight division.

The man from Burton on Trent does, however, boast a string of success in other notable amateur competitions. He is the reigning Commonwealth champion having won the gold medal at the Gold Coast games in 2018. Clarke also claimed gold at the European Union championships in 2014 and 2018 while he came away from the 2017 European championships with a silver medal.

The British boxer also has a long record of tournament wins at national level and he looks ready to take that success onto the Olympic stage.

Clarke’s Chances of Gold

The sportsbooks are usually good judges of any fighter at amateur or professional level. Markets from sports betting sites in the Philippines are starting to come through and a big range of odds will be found via sources affiliated with sbo.net.

Frazer Clarke will certainly be among the favourites in the Super Heavyweight boxing division but there will be some strong challenges along the way. A clear threat to The Eraser’s chances comes via the reigning amateur world champion. Bakhodir Jalolov won gold at the world’s in Yekaterinburg back in 2019 and he is many pundits’ favourite to double up with a gold medal in Tokyo.

Another man to watch is the Australian Justis Huni who claimed the bronze medal at those world championships. It’s a strong field but Frazer Clarke will feel that he has a good chance.

Those betting markets will emerge and they will continue to be adjusted in the lead up to Tokyo 2021. Sbo.net will update any fluctuations as they come in and they will also be on hand with news updates and opinion pieces on the Tokyo Olympics as a whole. Any readers who want to make a move will also find sign up options along with a selected range of offers and promotions.

The Next Steps

Having been overlooked for the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, it’s rumored that Frazer Clarke considered turning professional five years ago. After much internal debate, he made the decision to have one final crack at the games and he’s finally booked his place with the British team for Tokyo.

The Olympics marks the pinnacle of achievement for any amateur athlete but that quest has delayed Clarke’s step up to the professional ranks. As he approaches the age of 30, the question has to be asked as to whether the Eraser has left it too late.

Irrespective of what happens in Tokyo, it seems most likely that Clarke will finally turn professional later in 2021. He may well have a bright future ahead of him in the pro ring but it’s true that his extended stay in the amateur scene may have hindered his development.

The big fights against the current heavyweight champions such as Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury will have to wait. Bouts against less illustrious opponents will have to be taken on first.

For now, we wait for Tokyo and the Olympics. There’s no doubt that Frazer Clarke can be one of the stars of the games but can he build and deliver on his undoubted potential in the professional ranks?
