SPORTS SHORTS 84: DONNIE NIETES AIMS AN IMPRESSIVE WIN OVER PABLO CARRILLO TO EARN A WORLD TITLE FIGHT

PhilBoxing.com

Four-division world champion Donnie Nietes will battle Colombian Pablo Carrillo for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) international super flyweight title in his upcoming ring comeback on April 3, 2021 at the Caesar’s Palace Bluewaters in Dubai, UAE.

* * *

“This will be a better fight because it’s for a belt. I won’t make any adjustments in my training. I’ll continue to do what I’m doing. I’ll make my adjustment on top of the ring. That’s what I usually do in fights,” Nietes was quoted by SunStar Cebu.

* * *

Nietes last fought in December 31, 2018, defeating Japanese Kazuto Ioka for the vacant World Boxing Organization junior bantamweight title, his 42nd win in 48 matches, at the Cotai Arena in Macau.

* * *

Nietes is the longest reigning Filipino world champion, and he is looking for an excellent victory so that he will become a contender again in the world rankings at the super flyweight division.

* * *

If he wins impressively over Carrillo, Nietes will most probably be included in the world rankings of the World Boxing Organization, in which Ioka is the current world champion. He said he would love a rematch with Ioka.

* * *

Nietes says he is used to fighting younger boxers. “I have several younger opponents,” said Nietes. “They are very aggressive.” "El Trencito" Carrillo is age 32 years of Valledupar, Colombia, while "Ahas" Nietes is age 38 years of Murcia, Negros Occidental.

* * *

Nietes is the WBO mini-flyweight champion from 2007 to 2011, the WBO junior-flyweight champion between 2011 and 2016, the IBF flyweight champion from 2017 to 2018, and the WBO junior-bantamweight champion from 2018 to 2019. He holds a record of 42-1-5, 23 KOs.

* * *

Carrillo (25-7-1, 16 KOs), is ranked No. 8 in the world in the World Boxing Association. He is a serious opponent and the Filipino has to get past the Colombian to fullfill his renewed challenge for another world title.

* * *

Nietes is open to fighting any of the world champions and former champions in the super flyweight division including World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

* * *

The exception is fellow Filipino Jerwin Ancajas, who currently holds the International Boxing Federation super flyweight title. He doesn't want to clash with a countryman anymore after fighting Aston Palicte to a split draw retaining the WBO super flyweight title at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

* * *

Nietes vacated his WBO belt after the boxing body ordered a rematch. He instead pursued a fight against the superflyweight big names. All of them were reluctant to face the former ALA standout resulting in a long layoff two years and three months.

Eddie Hearn, promoter for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, revealed that he has received an unexpected bid to secure the rights to host the unification with WBC champion Tyson Fury.

* * *

Hearn would not divulge who the investor is, but indicated that a party from the Far East offered to stage the fight. "All I will say is it's in Asia. Not Macau but not far away, " Hearn said. Earlier this week, it was announced that both Fury and Joshua have signed their respective documents of a two-fight agreement.

* * *

Contrary to circulating reports, Hearn says the contest is still being targeted to take place in June or July. The goal, says Hearn, is to stage both contests in 2021.

Former NBA MVP James Harden scored his 100th 40-point game. Harden grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 15 assists in that game, to join Vince Carter as the only other Nets player to achieve a 40-point triple-double in history.

* * *

Harden is just the fourth player in league history to attain 100 40-point games, and he joins elite company in Wilt Chamberlain (173), Michael Jordan (122) and Kobe Bryant (100).

Nikola Jokic posts 12 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds to power Denver Nuggets past Charlotte Hornets . He racked up his 10th triple-double to lift Denver in leading its seventh win in eight games, playing just 28 minutes and three quarters while scoring 12 points on seven shots.

* * *

The performance was included in a record-breaking night at the NBA, as six players around the league put up triple-doubles. Jokic handed 10 of Denver’s season-high 37 assists on the night, and also posted his 228th career double-double to move past Dikembe Mutombo for the Nuggets franchise record.

The original US Dream Team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, managed by Hall of Fame coach Chuck Daly, consisted of Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Chris Mullin, John Stockton and Christian Laettner.

* * *

Every one of them, with the exception of Laettner, has since been initiated into the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Dream Team themselves were inducted in 2010. By the time they had all retired the 12 of them had collected 23 NBA championships, 15 MVPs and 117 NBA All-stars.
