Warriors Rout Cavs, 129-98

PhilBoxing.com

San Francisco, CA—After a lopsided loss to the Brooklyn Nets last Saturday, the Golden State Warriors bounced back against the Cleveland Cavs, 129-98. A run late in the first half coupled with a strong third quarter proved to be the difference in the game. The Warriors played at a fast pace all game taking advantage of a tired Cavs team who were on the back end of a back-to-back road trip. Stephen Curry, who shot just 2-9 on three pointers against the Nets, made 7 of 11 threes against the Cavs. Curry is averaging an astonishing five three pointers made per game over the past 30 days.

The game was close throughout the first half with the Warriors struggling to score when Curry was on the bench to begin the second quarter. However, once Curry checked back mid-way through the second, the Warriors started to hit shots to take a ten-point led at halftime. It was the momentum carried over into the third where the Warriors expanded the lead to 17 points with Curry scoring 36 at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth, the young Cavs, who were without Andre Drummond, Kevin Love, and Larry Nance, could not replicate their rally in the second quarter. With the victory secured, Curry did not return to the game. Colin Sexton scored 21 points with three assists. Jarrett Allen, who was part of the trade that landed the Nets with James Harden, had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. The Warriors were once again without a center with James Wiseman and Kevon Looney still nursing injuries.

The Warriors’ “center” tonight was Draymond Green, who dished out a career-high 16 assists and eight rebounds. The team’s recent offensive success has been an adjustment to have Curry play off the ball more with Green serving as the primary play-maker. Teams have focused all their attention to stop Curry, which has opened other players to easy cuts to the basket, which Green has feasted on as a passer. Green has dished out double figure assist totals in six of the last seven games.

The Warriors held the Cavs to just 39% shooting as a team. Statistically, the Warriors are a top ten defensive team. The Warriors play the last of their four-game homestand against the defending Eastern Conference champions, Miami Heat, on Wednesday before heading to Orlando to face the Magic on Friday. The Cavs did not win a single game during their five-game Western Conference road trip but will return home to face the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.
