Vietnam’s Pool Revolution: Hanoi Open Pool Championship

PhilBoxing.com

The Hanoi Open Pool Championship is more than just a tournament. For Vietnam, it has become a symbol of pool’s growing global reach — and a rallying point for a nation with one of the most passionate fanbases in the sport.

Last year, over 3,000 fans packed into the arena, creating an atmosphere that electrified players and viewers worldwide. Few capture that spirit better than leading Vietnamese cueist Duong Quoc Hong.

“Returning to the Hanoi Open always brings me a very special feeling. This is not just a tournament — this is where the great dream of seeing world-class billiards in Vietnam first began to take clear shape.”

For Duong, the event has transformed Vietnamese pool, sparking opportunities for young players and inspiring a new generation:

“The Hanoi Open is not only for individuals, but also a milestone for Vietnamese pool. After this event, a series of activities, playgrounds, and tournaments were organized, creating strong momentum and an environment for local players to grow. The presence of international tournaments in Vietnam has helped young cueists see a clearer career path, become more confident, and believe in their future.”

That sense of possibility resonates far beyond Vietnam. With world-class players sharpening their game on the World Nineball Tour, Duong insists Vietnamese players are ready to keep pace:

“Many opinions suggest that the level of Vietnamese pool is still far behind and cannot yet be compared to the world. To me, that’s not entirely true. We are not standing still, and neither is the world. Everyone is improving, everyone is getting stronger.”

As Nineball continues to surge across Asia, the Hanoi Open has become a reminder of just how powerful the sport’s growth can be:

“For me, the Hanoi Open is not just a tournament, but a reminder: the conditions are already here, and there is no reason not to give it everything, not to try our very best.”

With its electric crowds, world-class field, and a prize fund that underlines its prestige, the Hanoi Open is firmly established as one of the most important stops on the WNT calendar — and a milestone moment for Vietnamese pool.

The next Matchroom Major on the World Nineball Tour, the Hanoi Open Pool Championship, takes place 7–12 October at the Vietnam National Sports Complex. With a $200,000 prize fund and the world’s best players set to descend on Hanoi, it promises another unforgettable week of Nineball action.
