MISMATCHES IN AUSTRALIA CONTINUE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 05 Mar 2008
Despite claims that Australian boxing authorities were doing something about terrible mismatches featuring what former ?Promoter of the Year? Peter Maniatis called ?easy beats? referring to overmatched Filipinos, the mismatches continue.
At the Club Marconi in Sydney on March 7, Filipino Ruben Santillanosa who has a record of 15 defeats as against only 8 wins and 1 draw with five wins by knockout faces promising 20 year old Aussie Leonardo Zappavigna, a onetime sparring partner of boxing icon Manny Pacquiao who is undefeated in 12 bouts with 9 knockouts for the Australian lightweight title.
Zappavigna has won his last five fights by stoppages and three of them involved overmatched Filipinos. On July 13 Zappavigna won by a first round KO over Jun Geraldino then on August 10 he scored a second round TKO over Junmar Dulog and last November 23 dropped Ariel Omongos twice en route to a fourth round TKO.
In another seemingly horrible mismatch 27 year old Ernie Gonzales Jr who has a record of 1-1-1 with 1 KO according to boxrec.com takes on talented Davey Browne who is undefeated in 10 fights with 1 draw and 3 KO?s. In his last bout on November 30 Browne scored a ten round unanimous decision over tough Roberto Lerio and before that some two weeks earlier won an eight round unanimous decision over Robert Oyan.
In a third bout on the same card promoted by Billy Hussein Ariel Omongos who has lost 12 fights and won only 4 with 3 KO?s takes on Australian newcomer Ashley White who made his debut with a knockout victory.
