BOXING FRENZY RISES AGAIN IN MANDAUE CITY PhilBoxing.com Fri, 29 Feb 2008 During the frenzied days of the great Roman Empire, gladiators fought to the death to entertain the thrill-seeking mob, and only the strong survived the blood bath. Nothing much has really changed today except that the boxers of today no longer fight to the death but solely to the excitement and thrill of the paying throngs of fans who expect nothing less. ALA Promotions, after a year of absence, brings back the glorious days of boxing in Mandaue City where the likes of Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista, Z ?The Dream? Gorres, AJ ?Bazooka? Banal, and WBO mini-flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes fought their way to the limelight and earned stature they have now. On March 7, a group of young and fast-rising gladiators will attempt to follow the footsteps of their predecessors. Weng Haya, Jason Pagara, and Jether Oliva, and a host of boxers willing to risk it all for glory, will rock the ring with the might that would stun the crowd with sheer explosion of boxing entertainment. Born Wilson Vismar Ogso in a sleepy corner of Malitbog, Bukidnon, Philippine Boxing Federation No. 13 super bantamweight Weng Haya commenced his career with a technical KO of fellow debutante Tata Gelendez 2:24 of the third round. An 18-year-old orthodox, he paraded a record of 60 percent stoppage of his 10 wins, with only a single loss and through a split decision against Jonel Alivio on Oct 5 last year in Cagayan de Oro City. All the rest of his 10 fights he won convincingly. A full-round of fiery and bloody exchanges are expected to proper this encounter with veteran and another orthodox Pedro ?Mayorga? Malco (31 pro career fights) who rose from the sprawling valley city of Agusan del Norte. Exciting entertainment is also expected in the face off of lightweight Jason Pagara of Cagayan de Oro City against the more experienced William ?D? Nigger? Jorge of the tourist favorite city of Kidapawan in Cotabato. Pagara is a warrior that fought to the last round of the game. He started his professional career on May 22, 2007 when he outpointed War Bartiquil in Talibon, Bohol. Jorge is another miler who brought his fights to the end rounds, and has defeated by points four of his seven opponents. Light flyweight Jether ?Bomber? Oliva brings to the ring a more devastating prospect. At age 20, he won all of his seven fights in a campaign littered with KO victims. His demolition jobs started on Oct 2 last year with the canvas-sending work on fellow startup Jong Jong Mahinay in a Maasin, Sarangani boxing event. A former amateur standout, he kept his explosive fists blasting through his opponents, the latest of which was the more experienced Dave Cris of General Santos City. Around 1:39 of round 4, Cris dropped in the explosive hands of Oliva. March 7 will see Oliva facing Roel Honor of Butuan City. ?Do or Die: Power of Two? is expected to rock the crowd through the card well-chosen for both fist-power and long-winded technical plays. The main event showcases reigning WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight champion Milan ?Milenyo? Milendo fighting against the slithering puncher PABA minimumweight No. 2 Sofyan ?Cobra? Effendi of Indonesia in a non-title fight. This firebrand entertainment is brought to you by ALA promotions in cooperation with soda king Pepsi Cola Products Philippines and carmaker Norkis Group of Companies. The opening bout starts at 7 pm at the Mandaue City Sports & Cultural Complex. |
