EFFENDI HISSING ON A THIRD BID FOR A BOXING CROWN PhilBoxing.com Tue, 26 Feb 2008 Milan Milendo. A typhoon might be devastating but how can it destroy a slithering and poisonous snake? PABA minimum weight No. 2 Sofyan ?Cobra? Effendi of Indonesia has set his eyes at challenging reigning champion Milan ?Milenyo? Melindo for the WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight crown early next month. Melindo would be defending the crown for the second time after he frustrated the bid of another Indonesian pugilist Jack Amisa on Dec 2 last year. Effendi (7-4-1, KOs 6) is a devastating slugger who sends to the canvas 85 percent of his losing opponents, and more than half of them within the first three rounds. He has been known sturdy enough to stand the distance even against such explosive demolitionist as the death-dealing Heri Amol whose handiwork caused the death of still reigning WBO Inter-Continental flyweight boss Yo-Sam Choi of South Korea. Although his loss to Amol in his bid to unseat the reigning Indonesian minimumweight ruler, he took the fight to the 12th round without devastating result. He proved his strong knees against reigning PABA minimumweight champion Kwanthai Chor Nor Pattalung (17-0-1) in a brawl that forced the game into a 12th round decision. He only lost once by KO before the veteran Filipino fighter Bert Batawang (49-6-0) who made a well-timed hit into his body that brought him out 2:12 of round 4. Effendi has the quickness of a venomous snake, the punching prowess of an anaconda, and a durability of the banyan tree, which even destroyers as Amol and Pattalung could not bring him to his knees. In a career spanning more than four years, Effendi debuted through a stoppage of fellow startup Kamilus, and started a streak of four knockouts thereafter. Although his bids to the Indonesian and PABA minimumweight crows had been unsuccessful, the heart of the warrior in him continued to fuel the fire in his eyes and the poison in his fists. Facing Melindo in the upcoming extravaganza, dubbed as ?Do or Die: The Power of Two,? would be another window of opportunity to get into the league of champions by snatching the WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight crown. Could he tame the storm that is Milan Melindo? The ALA Promotions boxing event starts at 7:00 pm on March 7 at the Mandaue City Sports & Cultural Complex in Mandaue City. The night will also see action from Weng Haya against Pedro Malco of Butuan City and a host of six more bouts in the undercard, with four special attraction rounds from Seven Garrett of Texas and Eman Labanza of Tagbilaran City in the 122-lbs weight. |
