The Little Assassin Loses but Offered to Fight for PABA title PhilBoxing.com Sat, 23 Feb 2008 Kuchanamburi, Thailand (Feb. 22)- Young Rommel Asenjo, fondly called by his boxing fans as "The Little Assassin" lost by decision in 6 rounds to former World Boxing Organization (WBO) jr. flyweight champion Sansaknoi Sor Bonsaeng here today. But he is not like any other loser. In fact, right after the end of the very close fight which saw Thai boxing fans sitting at the edge of their chairs, Asenjo's manager, Vice Governor Manny Pinol was asked by no less than PABA President and World Boxing Association (WBA) Vice President for Asia Pacific Allan Kim to consider a PABA championship fight for the 18-year-old former amateur standout. "Your boy is very good," Kim told Vice Governor Pinol. "I am very impressed. Would you like him to fight for the PABA title?" he asked. Kim expressed surprise when told by Vice Governor Pinol that Asenjo is only 18-years old and has fought only seven times as a professional. Including his loss to Sor Bonsaeng yesterday, Asenjo's record is now 5 wins (5 KOs) and 2 losses all be decision. Asenjo caught the attention of Kim who supervised the PABA bantamweight championship fight betwqeen Thai champion Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat and Filipino challenger Glenn Porras because of his outstanding performance against the veteran Thai former WBO champion. "What's this boy's name?" asked Allan Kim as the former amateur standout from Pigcawayan, North Cotabato who was trained by Cuban coach Honorato Espinosa stood toe-to-toe with Bonsaeng. "I like him. He has a very bright future." Asenjo lost by decision in a fight whose result could have been the other way around had it been held outside of Thailand. Asenjo stalked the Thai as early as the first round and continued doing so until the bell sounded to end the fight after six rounds earning the admiration of even the highly-partisan Thai crowd. Noli Pinol, Vice Governor Pinol's brother who is also the trainer of the Braveheart Boxing Club boxers, said Asenjo needs a little more experience to prepare him for a big fight like the PABA championship. But with the offer of the title fight coming from Allan Kim, it is certain that Asenjo has what it takes to impress veteran boxing men. |
