IBF HASN?T APPROVED DARCHINYAN-KIRILOV TITLE FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 22 Feb 2008 The International Boxing Federation hasn?t approved a super flyweight title fight between champion Dimitri Kirilov of Russia and Australia?s Vic Darchinyan as yet. IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that Kirilov is scheduled to fight an optional defense on February 28 and that "should he win, he will be notified on March 3, 2008 to start negotiating with the leading available contender." According to Tucker that leading contender is likely to be Darchinyan who is ranked No.3 while the Philippines Z "The Dream" Gorres is ranked No. 4. Tucker said that if Darchinyan, who figured in a foul-riddled, controversial title eliminator against Gorres in Cebu City last February 2, "is still the leading available contender on March 3, Kirilov will be ordered to fight Darchinyan." The IBF executive disclosed that should Kirilov fight Darchinyan in the mandatory, the winner will have nine months to do his mandatory. Tucker pointed out that the winner "can decide to fight Gorres or anyone ranked in the IBF top 16 in an optional defense during the first seven months." Tucker stressed that the IBF "will not order the champion to fight Gorres" pointing out that since Gorres did not win the eliminator "he is not the mandatory challenger." The IBF had earlier given Gorres a May 15 deadline to defend his Inter-continental Championship title against the leading contender. Tucker said Ratings Committee chairman Daryl Peoples is working on the IBF I/C ratings and once the ratings come out he expected Gorres to fight the leading available contender. He said that for now, the IBF will accept an opponent that has "a good record with a minimum of twelve fights. At least two of those fights must be scheduled for ten rounds or four of those fights must be scheduled for eight rounds." At the same time Tucker stressed "we don?t want an opponent coming off a knockout loss." Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
