PORRAS MAKES WEIGHT FOR PABA BANTAM TITLE BOUT PhilBoxing.com Thu, 21 Feb 2008 BANGKOK, Thailand (Feb. 21) - Glenn "The Rock" Porras, currently the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asian Pacific Junior Bantamweight Champion and No. 1 Junior Bantamweight in the Philippines, easily tipped the scale today for his Pan-Asia Boxing Association (PABA) bantamweight championship here tomorrow. The southpaw from Luz Village, a barangay in M'lang, North Cotabato named after the former First Lady Luz Magsaysay, came in at 117.5 lbs., well below the weight limit of 118. Porras, 22, who is making his first foreign fight since turning professional in 2004 will be going up against Thai defending champion Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat in Chamsumnaburi, about 2 hours from Bangkok. It will be Rachawat's 9th defense of the PABA title he won in 2005. The Thai champion, who weighed in at 118 lbs., holds a record of 22 wins against 1 loss with 16 knockouts. Porras, on the other hand, has a record of 14 wins against 1 loss with 7 knockouts. The Filipino challenger, one of the seven Mindanao boxers being eyed by Top Rank to fight in the US, has vowed to go for a knockout win over the tough 27-year-old Thai champion whose only professional loss was by knockout scored by Indonesia's Anthony Mathias. Porras' trainer, Noli Pinol, said his boxer has what it takes to score a knockout victory over the Thai. "We will not leave the decision to the judges. We know the track record of local judges here in Thailand," he said. While the fight is a PABA sanctioned bout, all the judges are expected to be Thai officials. PABA Asian President Allan Kim of South Korea is expected to supervise the fight. PABA is the regional division of the World Boxing Association and a victory by Porras here will surely lead him to a slot in the world ratings of the WBA. North Cotabato Vice Governor Manny Pinol, Porras' manager, arrived in Bangkok today along with his Fil-Am friend Capt. Jun Flores, said Porras is aware of the odds stacked against him. "If we do not maul the champion to submission, we might fall victim to a hometown decision," Vice Gov. Pinol told Porras shortly after the weigh-in yesterday. A long line of Filipino boxers who ventured here in Thailand have suffered defeats in bouts described by many boxing observers as mismatches. Also fighting in the undercard tomorrow is 18-year-old Rommel Asenjo, a former amateur standout from Pigcawayan, North Cotabato who will be fighting former WBO International Jr. Flyweight Champion Sansaknoi Sor Bonsaeng in 6 rounds. Asenjo, called "My Little Assassin" for his stalking-style of fighting, holds an impressive record of 5 wins, 1 loss, with all of his victories ending in knockout. He easily made the 108-lb. limit for his fight in the weigh-in today. "We will give the Thai boxing fans a performance that they will remember and try to give Filipino boxing fans something to be happy about," said Noli, who is assisted here by assistant trainer Dante Bruce Lerio, brother of Olympians Arlan and Danilo. |
