WBO ORIENTAL INVADES SAMOA PhilBoxing.com Thu, 07 Feb 2008 ![]() Samoan cruiser-weight champion Lawrence Tauasa (28win-5loss-1draw-15ko) has just added the regional WBO Oriental Cruiser weight title to his ledger by defeating rugged Charles Baou (31win-8loss-28ko) of New Caledonia this past weekend. In a long-distance call to Philboxing.com, WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo informed that It was an exciting all out war for four rounds. "Samoan fight fans were into the fight, it was a great fight while it lasted," said Panoncillo. Tauasa was clearly the stronger fighter, as the referee halted the bout 00:50 sec into the fourth round when the corner of Baou through in the towel. Panoncillo, the man behind the growth of the popularity of the WBO in Asia explained that he is looking to have the WBO organization grow even further to the Pacific side of Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. "There is not much professional fighters there, however, there is abundance of amateurs who want to turn pro and they are huge kids, most of the kids weigh from middleweights to super heavyweights and they are good fighters. The WBO Asia Pacific YOUTH titles would fit perfect for these athletes in these countries and it would be a start for them to eventually establish themselves as professionals by winning this Youth titles," said Panoncillo. Panoncillo also explained that It was sure an icing on the cake when the Prime Minister TUILA'EPA Lupesoliai Aiono Sailele Malielegoai and Samoa His Highness Head of State Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi was present to support the event. The honor to have top Samoan Government officials present in our vacant WBO Oriental Cruiser-weight championship program made the show more important, aside from drawing about some 2500 Samoan boxing fans at Faleata Sports Complex on February 2, 2008. The show was promoted by Events Polynesia headed by Edwin Puni, Tuilagi Esera and John Glozier of New Zealand.
