ALA GYM WELCOMES WORLD-CLASS PUGILISTS PhilBoxing.com Sat, 02 Feb 2008 ![]() Daisuke Naito. Cebu City -- Great boxers often grew from great home gyms. And lately ALA Gym Talamban continued to receive boxing luminaries to train and hone their skills in a straightforward and tranquil ambience that had so far been a favorite of world-ranked warriors. Rev Santillan, Yukka Gejon, Randy Suico, In Jin Chi and Nonito Donaire Jr. among others who have trained here for their title fights. It is the home of Rey Bautista, Z Gorres, AJ Banal and the first ALA Gym champion, reigning WBO world minimumweight king Donnie Nietes. The latest name that has been added to regulary train at the ALA Gym is reigning WBC flyweight champ Daisuke Naito of Japan. From his debut in October 1996, Naito compiled a defeatless record of 19-0-2, fired with 14 KOs until he challenged Thai pugilist Pongsaklek Wonjongkam on April 2002. A frequent visitor of the Queen City of the South, Naito heard of the fabled ALA Gym Talamban. He practically trained in the Gym for his succeeding WBC flyweight adventures later on. He first came to train in August 2005 on the eve of his second bid to unseat Wonjongkam. He lost through a decision in the 7th round. He came back in March 2007, throwing himself into heavy training, for a third attempt at the crown. This time he snatched it from Wonjonkam through long 12-round rumble in the ring ending in a unanimous decision. This year, Naito came back to prepare himself to defend the WBC flyweight title against Wonjongkam, scheduled on March 8 in Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan. With the skillful guidance of chief trainer and former world-title challenger Edito ?Ala? Villamor, ALA Gym Talamban continues to open its arms to warriors who chanced, or perhaps chose, to knock its doors. ![]() |
