'FIGHTING DOC' SEES ACTION IN GORRES-DARCHINYAN UNDERCARD PhilBoxing.com Sat, 26 Jan 2008 In a sport sometimes criticized for its health hazards, the entry of JV Tuazon in pro boxing is something of a compliment, if not a big applause, to the game. A three-time New Jersey Golden Gloves Boxing champion, Tuazon is a full-bloodied Filipino now residing in New Jersey, USA. He debuted as a pro on August 4, 2006 in an encounter with a fellow newcomer Omar Carrol, which brought a draw in the fourth round. Beyond boxing, he dabbled with Mixed Martial Arts and Muay Thai, and got an earlier training with the Filipino martial art Kali, the mother of Escrima and Arnis. Behind this warrior?s path, Tuazon practices sports rehabilitation medicine, taking care of athletes going through the pain and immobility of physical injury and in need of the careful hands and brilliant mind of a trained specialist to bring them back to the competitive form again. He graduated at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, all the while boxing part-time while studying in graduate school as his heart for the sport grew into a passion. Boxing for him is a way to understand his patients more and treat them much better. But he has no illusion as a professional boxer in this stage of his career. ?In terms of boxing as a sports of skills, I am still a neophyte. But with regards to intangibles, I believe I got it. I got strength, a strong chin, and a big heart. I believe that those are the most important at the stage of my career right now. But I also keep on learning. As in life, there is always something to learn,? he said in his straightforward way. A few weeks ahead of the Gorres-Darchinyan eliminator card, ?Now or Never,? Tuazon flew in to log in more rounds of no-holds-barred sparring with ALA Boxing Gym regulars. He traveled miles and spent more than a thousand dollars on plane fares to come to the Philippines for a four-round skirmish. That?s the measure of this young pugilist?s passion for the game. Tuazon is set to exchange blows with Rey Villar of North Cotabato. Villar debuted a year later than Tuazon against Jerome Bontog in Bantayan Island, off the mainland Cebu. Both young ringsters shared the same record of 0-1-1. Unlike Bontog, Tuazon suffered a 3rd round stoppage in his second career fight, a setback that he must overcome mentally if he needs to bring more wins in. And with the way he talks, the setback has not caused a dent in his mind. While training in the ALA Gym Talamban, Tuazon faced the likes of Mark Jesson Taroja and Saddam Barambangan. With the guidance of ALA Gym coaches, he could be well equipped with skills he would need to face Villar in the ring for the first time. ?I would see how it plays in the ring,? he answered when asked of his strategy in the upcoming fight. ?And I will see it through from there.? To young Filipinos who would be watching him fight on Feb 2, Dr. JV Tuazon has this to say: ?Enjoy the show.? The much-awaited epic battle for the IBF No. 1 super flyweight challenger will be at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino in Lahug. Tickets are available only in ALA Gym Main Office, ALA Gym BTC, USA Sports TPE, USA Sports SM Boutique, USA Sports Ayala Boutique, SM City Customer Service, Ayala Center Customer Service, and Waterfront Cebu City Hotel Lobby. Beware of fake tickets. Editor's note: JV 'The Fighting Doc' Tuazon also contributes boxing articles to PhilBoxing.com. |
