CONDES NEEDS THREE WEEKS REST

PhilBoxing.com

IBF minimum weight champion Florante Condes will need to rest for at least three weeks before he can resume training for defense of his world title.

Dr. Jerry Reyes of the Orthopedic Clinic in Cainta Rizal who conducted a thorough examination of Condes after the fighter complained of ?severe pain? in his right wrist and ?pain in his upper back on movement? gave Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today his assessment in a telephone conversation yesterday afternoon.

Dr. Reyes said Condes suffered a ?back strain? apparently during sparring with bigger opponents and hurt his wrist when punching the heavy bag during a workout at the Wild Card Gym of business manager Rod Nazario last Tuesday.

Aside from recommending at least three weeks rest from working out in the gym Dr. Reyes said Condes would need to undergo ?physiotherapy? and ?ultrasound therapy? regularly. However, he said the champion could continue with his roadwork to be able to stay in shape.

Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain has arranged for Condes to have a complete medical examination by the GAB physician Dr. Dr. Redetor Viernes on Monday after which he will seek a two-month postponement of his scheduled 16 title defense against WBC No. 6 ranked Raul ?Raiyto? Garcia in Garcia?s hometown of La Paz on February 16.

Condes earlier demonstrated his desire to go ahead with the fight by going to the Mexican Embassy to obtain his visa but reportedly needed to produce some additional documents. Former world light welterweight champion Morris East who trained Condes for some time at the Main Event gym in Quezon City said earlier that Condes was ?in great shape? and he was confident of retaining his title.

Meantime, Condes left East and moved in with his aunt and uncle, Mr and Ms. Apolinar Valencia who reside in Cainta.

Condes? co-manager on record Dante Ortiz called Viva Sports to inquire how Condes got injured and appeared concerned over the possible postponement of the title defense. It was Ortiz who negotiated the contract for the title defense for which Condes would receive a purse of $50,000 net which IBF Championship Committee Chairman Lindsey Tucker said was ?a very, very good offer.?
