JOMANZ OMANZ: ANOTHER BANAL? PhilBoxing.com Wed, 09 Jan 2008 Two thundering fists, two widely different young men! While they were both born amidst the struggle of a family making a difficult living, Joseph ?Jomanz Omanz? Oma?a and AJ ?Bazooka? Banal are a study in contrast. Where Banal fought to help make ends meet for his family, Omanz was a headstrong kid whose mischief often earned him his mother?s scolding. Where Bazooka held his studies together through high school with sheer discipline, Jomanz lost interest in formal education and hit it out as a professional prizefighter early on. Yet, championship materials have these two young pugs much in common. Oma?a and Banal were both CVRAA Gold medalists. Omanz won three Gold medals for the Intercity Boxing, while Banal was a three-time Gold medalist with the National Youth Boxing. Above all, both have an immaculate professional record -- Omanz has 10-0-0 (6 KOs) and Banal has 16-0-0 (13 KOs). Oma?a started in amateur boxing at age 10, a year later than Banal. By age 17, as Banal, and also a pro, he fought more fights (five) than Banal (three), and won three more fights (five, two by KO) than Banal (two, one by KO). The love for boxing and the prospect of travel sparked the unrelenting spirit of Jomanz Omanz. And his fight history tells he had been around places in the country. His first professional fight against Jomar Cabusas in October 2006 was a stunning stoppage in the first round. This started a line of demolition against his ring opponents. The year 2007 closed with a heart-pounding knockout of Regie Binueza in the 2nd round in Danao City, a victory that came on the heel of stopping the veteran Albert Cesa also in Round 2 of the Payback card in Manila. Oma?a knows that his future in boxing lies in the daily struggle towards disciplining himself during his entire career. ?In boxing, you do not know where you are going. What you know is that your future depends on how much effort and sacrifices you put into it,? he observed. But his future is getting a lot brighter than he knows it. With the retirement of WBO Asia Pacific lightweight champion Czar Amonsot, a marquee name in international boxing, Jomanz Omanz walks just in time as the new kid on the block, now being groomed by preeminent boxing patron Antonio ?Tony? Aldeguer, as the next big thing in Philippine boxing. Aldeguer believes that Omanz will be a fiery presence in the bantam and the super bantam weight categories. ALA Boxing Gym has brought four marquee names to the international boxing arena, foremost of which is reigning WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight champion Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista, followed by reigning WBO Youth super flyweight champion AJ ?Bazooka? Banal, reigning IBF Intercontinental super flyweight champion Z ?The Dream? Gorres, and reigning WBO minimum weight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes. Jomanz Omanz will face his most daunting challenge ever on January 20 before Sinulog fans at the Gaisano Country Mall Parking Area. He will be fighting the more experienced RP No. 7 Pedro Malco of Butuan City. The card dubbed simply as ?Sinulog Boxing? features other bouts between young pugilists from the Visayas and Mindanao. The Pit Senyor extravaganza will be open to the public for free. |
