TOP PROMOTER SAYS MONEY IS CAUSE OF MISMATCHES IN AUSTRALIA By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 07 Jan 2008 Australia?s 2006 ?Promoter of the Year? Peter Maniatis says the terrible mismatches featuring Filipino boxers in Australia its ?all about money.? Maniatis who was hosts a popular TV boxing show and was named ?Mr. Boxing? in 2007 said the Filipino fighters earn A$300 a round and they take the fights to ?send money back to their families and we understand that.? He also revealed that the ?expensive lifestyle in Australia causes you to be desperate.? Maniatis said that weekly rent amounts to around P6,000 to P7,000 while food is expensive and so is travel. He said ?they cant say no to a fight because it makes money to live. ? While he ?understands their situation? Maniatis said that ?managed properly and in a different situation where they can pick and choose their fights you wont see these mismatches. But I understand because you have to put food on the table and you have to pay your bills.? Maniatis who is in the Philippines to try and work with local promoters and managers to uplift the standards and to get good Filipino boxers to fight good Australian boxers in some sort of exchange program said he wants to ?show the Australian public that there are fantastic Filipino fighters.? He ruled the possibility of getting the big names such as Manny Pacquiao and promising fighters such as AJ ?Bazooka? Banal but indicated that lesser names Rev Santillan, Denis Laurente and others could join IBF Pan Pacific lightweight champion Ranee Ganoy who fights out of Dido Bohol?s stable in Sydney. Maniatis said ?we can showcase them because they are fantastic fighters who can box. I think it will bridge the gap and lift Australian boxing which is not the most popular sport at the moment.?
