VILORIA SHOULD WIN EASILY

PhilBoxing.com

Former WBC world light flyweight champion Brian Viloria should win easily in his scheduled ten round bout against ageing Colombian veteran Jose Garcia Bernal at the Alameda Swap Meet in Los Angeles on Saturday, Manila Time.

The 27 year old Viloria who is ranked No. 6 by the WBC is ten years younger than Bernal who is not even rated in the top 40 by the World Boxing Council and lost three of his last four fights in 2007. The Colombian sports a record of 27-9-1 with 18 knockouts as against Viloria?s record of 19-2 with 1 no decision and 12 wins by way of knockouts.

Bernal?s sole victory last year was against Luis Bolanos who had not won a fight in his pro career according to boxrec.com and entered the ring against Bernal with a record of 0 wins and 21 defeats, 16 by knockout.

In his last bout on October 12, 2007 Bernal lost by a twelfth round knockout to Juan Mercedes in a WBO Latino super flyweight title fight. Earlier, on May 12 he dropped a unanimous decision to Nerys Espinoza in a WBA Fedelatin light flyweight title bout. Before that Bernal also lost by unanimous decision to Julio David Roque Ler in a clash for the vacant WBA Fedelatin super flyweight crown.

Bernal is a southpaw who often switches his stance in a fight, To his credit Bernal has taken on a number of world class fighters including many champions and is known to move from light flyweight to super flyweight when required.

Viloria is determined to erase the memory of some controversial decisions that have gone against him in close fights and has indicated he wants to take the decision out of the hands of the judges which means winning by a knockout or TKO. Based on the information available regarding Bernal, Viloria should be perfectly capable of doing just that.

The decision that hurt Viloria the most was when he dropped a majority decision to Edgar Sosa last April 14 in a battle for the vacant light flyweight title after losing another questionable decision in his rematch with Omar Nino in November 2006. Viloria lost the title to Nino in a stunning upset in August that same year.

Nino was stripped of the title after he tested positive for a banned substance in a routine post-fight drug test in their rematch and the fight was declared a ?no decision.?

Viloria won the WBC crown with a sensational first round KO over Eric Ortiz in 2005 and became an instant hit with Filipino boxing fans since he traced his roots to Ilocos Sur where his parents lived before moving to Hawaii.
