GARY SHAW BLAMES DONAIRE?S MANAGEMENT

PhilBoxing.com

Promoter Gary Shaw who is distressed over the numerous claims of unfair treatment by IBF/IBO super flyweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire leveled against him says it?s a problem of miscommunication and placed the blame on Donaire?s manager Cameron Dunkin.

In a lengthy overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Shaw said ?there?s a lot of miscommunication unfortunately and I think its through the management and that?s where I think the problem is. Its certainly not with me.? At the same time the well-known promoter who at times handled such greats as heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson, the late Diego Corrales, Shane Mosley and Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao for a couple of fights told us he would be happy to discuss each and every issue that Donaire raised.

On Donaire?s claim he didn?t get anything at all from the $50,000 that Solar Sports paid Shaw for the Philippine television rights Shaw explained ?the TV rights are paid to me like they are paid to Don King or to Bob Arum or whatever and it goes into the pooled money so I could pay (Antonio) Tarver, (Vernon) Forrest and the undercards and everything else. There was never a discussion of Nonito getting that money.?

Shaw pointed out that he had ?worked hard to put Nonito on that tripleheader? emphasizing that Showtime "doesn't do tripleheaders,"

While he admitted there were some fighters he didn?t like, Shaw said any suggestion that he doesn?t like Donaire or is somehow against him ?is crazy. I love Nonito Donaire and that?s what?s hurting me so badly.? He said that a call to Showtime will reveal that they put Donaire on the December 1st fight card ?because Gary Shaw thinks he is going to be a superstar? even as he disclosed that one year ago he was ?pushing HBO? to put him on television.

Shaw flatly refuted allegations that he didn?t want Donaire to visit the Philippines and train in Cebu for the title defense against the tough Mexican Luis Maldonado over whom he scored an eighth round TKO at the Foxwoods Resiort & Casino last Sunday, Manila Time. He said ?in my whole life I never told anybody where to train. I never had a discussion? about this."

The promoter revealed what reportedly surfaced yesterday. Shaw said he was ?not sure that Cameron (Dunkin) has a real contract with Nonito and I am not sure that Cameron didn?t say that if Nonito went to the Philippines he might lose him.? Shaw insisted he ?never had any issue or discussion with Nonito for him to train in the Philippines.? He added, ?why should I care? If he told me tomorrow he is going to Korea to train what difference does it make to me?? Shaw hinted that ?what might have happened maybe is that Cameron told Nonito, Gary Shaw doesn?t want you to go to the Philippines.? The promoter maintained ?I love the Filipino people. I have friends that are Filipino. I still like Manny Pacquiao. If you see Buboy Fernandez (Pacquiao?s Filipino trainer) he?ll tell you he hugged and kissed me when I was in Manila? for the WBC Convention.

Shaw said he didn?t sense he had a difference with Donaire?s manager ?until all this came out. A couple of people called me and said we think Cameron may be undermining you.?

We called Donaire but after the conversation with Shaw but he didn't answer and although his father who lives seperately not far from Nonito's home did talk to us it was strictly off-the-record since he didnt wish to exacerbate the situation.

Shaw answered every issue from hotel rooms to seats for the fight, flight delays, the future and even the seeming problems between father and son . All this will be an essential part of Saturday's feature on "The Filipino Flash - No Flash in the Pan" in The Manila Standard Today.
