Torre keeps share of lead in Asian Senior Chess Championship

TAGAYTAY City - Defending champion Grandmaster (GM) Eugene Torre drew with compatriot International Master (IM) Petronio Roca to keep a share of the lead with two others after fourth round of the 9th Asian Seniors Chess Championship (Standard event) here at the Tagaytay International Convention Center late Tuesday.

The 67-year-old Torre, whose Elo rating of 2449 pales in comparison to his foe?s 2376, agreed a draw after 31 pushes of Queen's Indian defense to raise his total 3.5 points in the 34-player, ten-nation competition hosted by the Tagaytay City government thru Cavite 7th District Cong. Abraham ?Bambol? Tolentino Jr. and Tagaytay City Mayor Agnes Tolentino.
1973 First Pepsi Cola High School Bicol Region Champion and 1980 Baguio Asian Junior champion International Master (IM) Domingo Razo Ramos had something to say.

"Walang talo ang puti (Petronio Roca) pero medyo malayo pa sa panalo," referring the game between Roca, playing white against Torre.

Torre hiked his total to 3.5 points, the same output of his fifth round opponent International Master (IM) Chito Garma and National Master (NM) Cesar Caturla, who downed National Master (NM) Carlo Lorena and National Master (NM) Rolzon Roullo, respectively.

Roca, on the other hand, climbing to 3.0 points, good for a tie for 4th to 7th place in the company of Fide Master (FM) Adrian Ros Pacis, Fide Master (FM) Syarif Mahmud of Indonesia and Than Khin of Myanmar.

Pacis beat Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Angelito Camer of Australia, Mahmud nipped Iraj Sabah of Iran and Khin split the point with Fide Mater (FM) Oleg Rinas of Kazakhstan.

At stake in the tournament organized by Tagaytay Chess Club on behalf of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) are cash prizes and medals.
The champion will bring home $500, the runner-up will earn $400, the third placer will pocket $300, the fourth $200 and the fifth and sixth placers $150.

In the over-65, the champion will bring home $350, the runner-up $200, the third placer $150 and fourth and fifth placers $100.

The top female players will receive $300 (over-50) and over-65 ($100).
