GM Gonzales, Rivera, Tan, Arquero save the day for Army vs Airforce

GRANDMASTER Jayson Gonzales, First Lieutenant Irene Rivera, team captain Lieutenant colonel Perpetuo Tan Jr. and Private Kevin Arquero came through with victories to lift the Philippine Army to a 6.5-5.5 victory over the defending champion Philippine Airforce to remain on top with five match points in the ongoing AFP-PNP-PCG Olympics 2018 Chess Team Championships being held at the PNP Sports Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City last Thursday, October 18, 2018.

Playing white, GM Gonzales, ranked Sergeant, punished International Master Barlo Nadera, ranked Sergeant and the team captain of Airforce, for his middle game mistakes and carved out a 39-move victory of a Double Fianchetto Opening on top board while First Lieutenant Rivera, showed superb endgame technique to turn a marathon 77-move triumph over Captain Delfin Bolla.

Tan, on the other hand defeated First Lieutenant Jess Pinalgan, Arquero subdued A2C Nigel Galan while Lieutenant colonel Martin Famador won by default over Colonel Aldrick dela Torre.

But it was the 40 year-old First Lieutenant Rivera, a member of the Army rehabilitation unit in Marawi and assigned also at Army Signal Regiment, broke the tie (5.5 points all) because of the mistakes of Captain Bolla after the latter's exchange of his active knight against Rivera's black bishop in their knight and pawn versus bishop and pawn end game.

"Maybe Captain (Delfin) Bolla overlook the outside passed pawn of First Lieutenant (Irene) Rivera in the H-file square after he exchange his knight against the black bishop of First Lieutenant (Irene) Rivera." said Army coach Corporal Ildefonso ?Ponching? "I knew that this was a tough tournament with all the players. I just tried to play my best and now I am really happy." referring the big wins of the Infanta, Quezon native First Lieutenant Rivera, who finish Electronics and Communication Engineering at Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology.

Captain Marlou Daguio, Corporal Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, and Private First Class Antonio Chavez Jr.,meantime claiming draws against Lieutenant colonel Vicente Flora Jr., A2C International Master Richilieu Salcedo III and A2C Sheider Nebato, respectively.

First Lieutenant Ryan Castro, Captain Mark Buscas, A2C Kelly Rancap and A2C Lennon Hart Salgados provided the wins for Airforce coach by Senior Sergeant National Master Ronald Llavanes by beating Lieutenant colonel Lebrito Olmuguez, Lieutenant colonel Danilo Parba, Private Grandmaster-elect Ronald Dableo and Private Alfred Rapanot, in order.

The Philippine National Police backed up by PSSUPT Jonnel Estomo, coaches SPO3 Jomes Mendoza Pascua and SPO1 Renato "Buboy" Abalos,meanwhile blasted no show Philippine Navy, 12-0.
PNP bets are National Master Ali Branzuela, National Master Rolando Andador, Jerry Tolentino, Leandro Macasinag,Ruvillo Paulin, PSI Horizon Villanueva,PSUPT Jaime Santos, PSUPT Antonieto Canete, PINSP Ronald Agabao and PCINSP Christopher Muego.

Tournament director is Maj.Libertino, Chief Arbiter is IA Patrick Lee and assisted by NA Roy Madayag in this Standard 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment time control, using the match point system, double Round-robin format in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines sanctioned tournament.-Marlon Bernardino-
