NBA NEWS: Seven teams interested in Jimmy Butler

PhilBoxing.com

A few days after Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor indicated the team is ready to trade Jimmy Butler, six clubs -- Houston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn, Detroit, Miami and Portland ? signified their interest in landing the disgruntled All-Star.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported though that Butler?s three preferred destinations are the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks.

All three, Wojnarowski said, have a lot of cap space to give the maximum space to sign Butler as a free agent in July.

Philadelphia is interested in that it has the assets to make a move for a player of Butler?s ilk. That includes youngsters Markelle Fultz and Dario Saric as well as a whole plethora of draft capital.

As for Houston, the team doesn?t have much capital to engage in talks with Minnesota unless there?s a third team involved.

Plan is to receive offers for Butler over the next two days before reaching out to the All-Star and his agent as a way to figure out where he might sign an extension and allow Minnesota to get the best possible return.

It?s worth noting that teams are interested in moving for Butler without a guarantee that he signs an extension.

All of this also comes on the heels of Minnesota signing center Karl-Anthony Towns to a super-max extension. Given Butler?s issues with KAT, it?s clear that his time in Minneapolis is coming to an end.

KAT has decided to accept an extension that could pay him as much $190M over the next five years.

The announcement may be further indication that Butler is headed out of town soon. A report this week suggested that Towns, who clashed with the former Bulls star during his first year in Minnesota, was delaying a decision on an extension until Butler?s fate was decided.

News first broke out that the Wolves were discussing an extension with Towns, and they have been waiting more than two months for the fourth-year center to accept their offer.

Terms of the super-max contract enable Towns to earn 30 percent of the team?s salary cap by making an All-NBA team or by being named MVP or Defensive Player of the Year at least once over the next two seasons. The deal does not contain a player option.

The yearly cap hit for the Wolves projects to $27.25M, $29.43M, $31.61M, $33.79M and $35.97M, posts Bobby Marks on ESPN Now. If Towns earns one of the above honors, the 2019/20 cap hit would rise to $32.7M.

The new deal also establishes Towns as the cornerstone of the franchise for the foreseeable future. He quickly turned into one of the best young centers in the league after being drafted with the top pick in 2015.
