FILIPINO IM GARCIA BEATS INDON GM MEGARANTO TO LEAD KL CHESS KIDS TEAM ALPHA TO THE CHAMPIONSHIPS TROPHY

KUALA Lumpur, Malaysia---International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia proved unstoppable at the top board as he led the KL Chess Kids Team Alpha to the championship in the ASTRO Merdeka Rapid Open Team Chess Championship 2018 Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Cititel Mid Valley Cititel Hotel here.

Garcia, the head coach of Ateneo de Manila University chess team, beat Grandmaster Susanto Megaranto to lead the KL Chess Kids Team Alpha to a 3-1 win over the Kab. Bekasi A Indonesia in the ninth and final round.

Apart from Garcia, the KL Chess Kids Team Alpha backed up by Jaya Kumar Lechmanan was made up of Board 2 International Master Paulo Bersamina, Board 3 Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus and Board 4 Vince Angelo Medina.

Bersamina halved the point with International Master Farid Firan Syah, Literatus toppled International Master Anjas Novita and Medina drew with Rida Mutiani, respectively.

Interestingly, Bersamina, Literatus and Medina, are all members and products of the multi-titled National University (NU) chess team of team manager Samson Go and head coach United States Chess Federation (USCF) Master Jose ?Jojo? Aquino Jr.

The KL Chess Kids Team Alpha backed up by Jaya Kumar Lechmanan finished with eight wins and one loss, 16 Match Points and 26.5 board points in nine outings.

PT Pelabuhan Tanjung Priok A Indonesia was comprised by IM Sean Wishand Cuhendi, IM Lutfi Muhammad Ali, FM Yoseph Thelifus Taher and FM Ivan Maxmillian Putra wound up second after beating fellow 15 Match Points 3rd placer Tagaytay City Chess Team of NCFP Secretary-General and Congressman Abraham ?Bambol? Tolentino Jr. in a tie break points.

The Tagaytay City Chess Team was composed of IM Angelo Young, GM Rogelio ?Joey? Antonio Jr., Rodolfo Panopio Jr. and Antonio Chavez Jr.

Rounding up to the top 20 place are ACA Men?s Team A, PeBT Selangor, East Java, PT Pelabuhan Tanjung Priok B, Jakarta A Team, KL Chess Kids Team Beta, The Discovered Attackers, Marfori, Philippines, PPCT A, ACA Men?s Team B, Kab. Bekasi A Indonesia, City of Dasmarinas, PT Pelabuhan Tanjung Priok Puti, Jakarta B Team, Kab. Bekasi A Indonesia, Penang State Team and Raja Murjah.

No less than Arkady Dvorkovich, a former Deputy Prime Minister and a former Assistant to the President in the Russian government, who is running for FIDE President led the closing rites along with former Women?s World Champion Grandmaster Zhu Chen and tournament director Hamid Majid of the Malaysian Chess Federation.
