WBC Sessions Push Through Despite Batasan Bombing

PhilBoxing.com

MANILA ? Foreign delegates in the ongoing World Boxing Council (WBC) 45th Annual World Convention being held at the Manila Hotel here were unfazed by the bomb attack in the House of Representatives in Quezon city last night and went back to the session hall for the resumption of the scheduled activities today (Nov. 14).

?We sympathize with the victims and our sessions will push through as scheduled as most delegates (from Europe, Asia and the United States) understand that the incident happened outside Manila,? said Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Commissioner Juan Ramon ?Monju? Guanzon who was having dinner inside the session hall with delegates when news of the bombing that killed three people, including a Mindanao congressman, broke out.

When news about the bombing spread, most of the delegates were in the middle of their dinner and many of them left and went directly to their rooms after receiving long distance calls and text messages from their relatives back home.

The convention will proceed with the matters of the agenda today including the categorizing of boxers in every nation affiliated to the WBC to avoid serious mismatches presided by former world bantamweight champion Jeff Fenech of Australia.

The following will also be tackled: medical report to the World Congress in Cancun, Mexico; training clinics and certification of trainers; five major problems of boxing in the world for a plan of improvement; strong and definitive implementation of the Boxers International Identification; implementation of communications for medical suspension in the world.

The general meeting wll also discuss the ratification of the agreements of 2006 convention held in Croatia; ratings appeal committee report; building of statue of Rocky Marciano in Boston; project on the use of sports as a toll to mitigate social excluded people in Africa most particularly in Sonstone Kashiba.

Luis Escalona also presented the pre-title bouts weigh-ins program followed by the ratings appeal committee report.

Meanwhile, the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) session on Tuesday voted to accept the fledgling Indonesia Boxing Association (IBA) as provisional member on representation by Indon promoter Temuzin Rambing.

Also during the OPBF session, OPBF President Frank Quill presented a ?championship belt? to GAB Chairman Eric R. Buhain ?for his exemplary contribution in the promotion of regional title fights.?

The next conventions will be held in Chengdu, China in 2008 and in South Korea in 2009.
