GORRES-DARCHINYAN TO GO TO PURSE BID By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 11 Nov 2007 The IBF super flyweight eliminator between Z ?The Dream? Gorres and former IBF/IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan will go to a purse bid because apparently after the Darchinyan camp made an offer to Gorres which was accepted, promoter Gary Shaw decided not to go ahead. As a result, the handlers of Gorres headed by Tony Aldeguer, who owns the ALA Gym have indicated they will make a purse offer. Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today learned that whoever wins the purse offer, Darchinyan will get 60 percent and Gorres 40 percent because the Australian is ranked No. 5 by the IBF and Gorres No.6. However, some Filipino boxing people have questioned how Darchinyan who was knocked out by ?The Filipino Flash? Nonito Donaire in the fifth round as a flyweight and only recently moved up to super fly and won the IBO title defeating a tough Federico Catubay, whose talent was seriously suspect. Sports Nut itself said Darchinyan ?labored to a twelve round stoppage? raising the question as to how the Australian could be ranked higher than Gorres who was clearly robbed of the WBO title in a showdown with undefeated Mexican Fernando Montiel last February. Besides, Gorres scored an explosive eighth round knockout over former world champion Eric Ortiz last August in Sacramento further fueling serious questions about the IBF ratings. In the meantime Sports Nut of Australia reports that the manager of Darchinyan, Elias Nasser has told a Sydney radio station that they were prepared to pay ?whatever it takes? to have the fight staged in Sydney The winner of the eliminator between Gorres who is the IBF Intercontinental champion and Darchinyan will get a mandatory title shot at recently crowned champion Dimitri Kirilov of Russia who is handled by celebrated trainer Freddie Roach.
