GEJON SUFFERS DEVASTATING FIRST ROUND KO

PhilBoxing.com

Lanky minimum weight Eriberto ?Yukka? Gejon suffered a devastating first round knockout at the hands of undefeated Nicaraguan sensation Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez at the famed Korakuen Hall Saturday night that effectively ruined the Filipino?s hopes of another title shot.

The WBA No. 5 ranked Gejon who is managed by Rex ?Wakee? Salud twice lost to Japan?s reigning world champion Yutaka Niida, the last time on September 1this year when he dropped a unanimous decision. He had earlier lost what was regarded as a controversial ten round technical decision to Niida on September 25, 2005.

The 28 year old Gejon who has a record of 23-3-1 with 14 knockouts was dropped with a vicious combination of body shots which saw the Filipino crumble to the canvas in agony after a mere 69 second of the opening round. It was the first time that Gejon was decked and it proved that the undefeated 20 year old Gonzalez is a fighter to be reckoned with even as he improved his record to 15 knockouts in 15 fights.

Gonzalez is now under the famous Teiken Gym of well-known Japanese businessman-sportsman Akihiko Honda who had earlier acquired WBA super featherweight champion Edwin Valero (22-0,22 KO?s) and WBC featherweight champion Jorge Linares (24-0, 15 KO?s).

Well-known boxing manager, matchmaker and journalist Joe Koizumi quoted Honda as saying ?It may be hard to find an opponent against this hard-punching kid from now on. Koizumi predicted that just like Valero and Linares, Gonzalez is certain to cause a sensation in Japan.

The newest recruit of the Teiken Gym, the 20 year old Gonzalez won the Nicaraguan title with a third round knockout over Miguel Tellez last July 13 after demolishing Jose Luis Varela in the first round to win the vacant WBA Fedelatin title on May 12.

Gejon, on the other hand, has fought sparingly having only two fights in-between his losses to Niida. On September 22, 2006 the ?Wakee? Salud fighter scored a second round TKO over a Thai patsy Yoddoi Sithsoei and last March 3 won a unanimous ten round decision over another Thai, Wisan Sor Suchanya.
