VERNIE TORRES LOSES ANEW IN ONTARIO, CA.
By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sat, 03 Nov 2007
Moments ago, Filipino featherweight journeyman Vernie Torres (27-11-0 15KOs) lost a winning bout by 5th round KO against Julio Zarate (26-4-1 15KOs) of Mexico at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California.
Here is a report from the ringside relayed to PhilBoxing by Pex Aves.
1st round was uneventful as both boxers were sizing up each other.
In the 2nd round, Torres began chasing Zarate all over the ring. In the dying minutes of the 2nd round Torres hit Zarate with a solid right straight to the jaw. Zarate was mercifully saved by the bell after the referee almost reached the 10 count after a knockdown.
In the 3rd round, Zarate was running all over town as Vernie keeps on chasing him.
In the 4th round, Zarate intentionally hit Torres below the belt and Zarate was deducted a point by the referee for the foul as Torres was shaking and rolling in the canvas due to terrible pain.
In the fifth round action, Vernie was advised by his corner to take a breather because he was still a little bit groggy due to the low blow but Vernie instead went straight to war again against the advise of his corner which was a suicide. Vernie was hit flushed in the chin and was kayoed.
Zarate won by 5th round KO.
Torres absorbed his 5th straight loss in the U.S. since losing to Jose Navarro in May last year.
