PROMOTERS HAVEN?T MET ON GORRES-DARCHINYAN ELIMINATOR By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 30 Oct 2007 Promoters Golden Boy, who handles Z ?The Dream? Gorres, and Gary Shaw, who is responsible for Australian Vic Darchinyan, have not even met to begin negotiations on the IBF mandated eliminator for the No. 1 super flyweight ranking and a mandatory crack at newly crowned champion Dimitri Kirilov of Russia. IBF Championship Committee Chairman Lindsey Tucker Jr earlier informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that should the two camps fail to come to terms by November 8, the IBF would call for a purse bid. Facing that possibility, the handlers of Gorres led by Tony Aldeguer along with Golden Boy Promotions have agreed to ?assign the negotiations on their behalf? to respected international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz. Speculations that the Gorres-Darchinyan eliminator would be on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr ? Ricky Hatton on December 8 were debunked by Aldeguer. Oscar De La Hoya himself in an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today a few days ago said the Gorres-Darchinyan fight would not happen on December 8 which was apparently what the Australian?s camp was pushing for. Aldeguer said that ?all efforts will be exerted? by Lewkowicz to have the eliminator staged in the Philippines. Darchinyan?s twelfth round TKO win over wild-swinging Federico Catubay which was posted on the internet was not at all impressive although Darchinyan did show he had some power. Darchinyan won the vacant IBO super flyweight in that Sydney showdown. The cocky Australian lost his IBF and IBO flyweight titles when he suffered a shocking fifth round knockout at the hands of ?The Filipino Flash? Nonito Donaire last July. Donaire is currently training at the ALA Gym for his December 1 title defense against Luis Maldonado. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
