BRAVE CATUBAY STOPPED BY DARCHINYAN IN LAST ROUND By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 Oct 2007 Federico Catubay fought bravely against former IBF/IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan but in the end lost by a TKO at 2:03 of the twelfth and final round in an IBO super flyweight title fight at Auburn RSL in Sydney, Saturday night. It was the cocky Australian?s first fight since he was knocked out in the fifth round by ?The Filipino Flash? Nonito Donaire last July and immediately after the win over Catubay called out Donaire for a rematch. The hard-hitting southpaw Darchinyan landed some powerful lefts in the opening round but Catubay who is also a southpaw bravely taunted him every time he landed. The Melbourne Age reported that Darchinyan demonstrated his "new patient approach" against the durable Filipino. Catubay had his moments when he caught Darchinyan with a couple of solid lefts in round two that caused a swelling under the Australian?s right eye but Darchinyan countered with good body shots nearing the end of the round according to a report on Sports Nut. Darchinyan was caught with a huge left as he launched an attack in the third round but he stayed on top, keeping Catubay under pressure. However, the rugged Filipino nailed Darchinyan with a haymaker right and staggered him for a moment. Darchnyan dropped Catubay in round seven but he was quickly up on his feet and fought back. The Filipino was staggered again in round nine but swarmed all over Drachinyan in round ten. Although Darchinyan dropped him again in round eleven the game Filipino was quickly on his feet and fighting back. In the final round the constant punishment took its toll on a brave Catubay and referee Garry Dean was forced to call a halt when the Filipino appeared badly hurt and unable to defend himself. The Age said the 31 year old Darchinyan who improved his record to 29-1 with 23 knockouts "methodically picked apart his courageous but outgunned opponent." With the loss Catubay dropped to 20-14 wuth 11 knockouts. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
