SUELO EARNS THIRD STRAIGHT TITLE IN SINGAPORE

SINGAPORE---National Master Roberto Suelo Jr. won the Patrick Tay Chess Challenge 2017 (Open division) last July 8 held at the Boon Lay Community Club, 10 Boon Lay Place in Singapore.
The 1996 Philippine Junior champion scored a victory against International Master Zhen Yu Cyrus Low of Singapore in the seventh and final round to finish undefeated with seven wins in as many round.
Suelo also beat candidate master Loh Shao Kai Dylan of Singapore, Jer Umadhay of the Philippines, James Attwood of Australia, Pok Wern Jian of Malaysia, International Master Enrique Paciencia and Rolly Parondo of the Philippines, respectively.
"First of all I would like to thank God," Suelo said, an active member of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC) in Singapore.
"I'm happy to win again," added Suelo who also topped the Thomson Chess Fiesta-Cup Rapid event last May and the ACA Hari Raya Rapid Open Chess 2017 last June, both held here in Singapore.
"I really pushed myself to win," said Suelo.
Suelo currently works as a chess teacher in Singapore. Born and raised in Quezon City, the former son of a shoe maker is best remembered in helping the Rizal Technological University (RTU) Mandaluyong woodpushers win the national championships title during the national inter-collegiate in the mid 90's.
At solo second place is IM Pacienca with 6.0 points followed by GM Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor and Jimson Bitoon with 5.5 points each for third and fourth placers in a Filipino dominated event.
