IBF GIVES SOLIS AN ULTIMATUM By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 22 Sep 2007 IBF Championship Chairman Lindsey Tucker Jr has effectively given IBF light flyweight champion Ulises Solis who pulled out of a scheduled title defense against mandatory challenger Bert Batawang twice claiming a shoulder injury an ultimatum and asked him to provide medical documentation in support of his injury claim. In a letter to Top Rank Inc., promoters of the postponed October 4 title fight Tucker said that if Solis has a medical problem he "must provide the IBF with medical documentation. That documentation must list a diagnosis of his injury and a prognosis of his return to the ring." Tucker cited the IBF rule on Medical Extension which states that "if a champion is justifiably disabled and such disability has been proven to and accepted by a physician approved by the President of the IBF/USBA, he may be granted a medical extension not to exceed 90 days beyond the mandatory due date. If it is determined by the physician that the boxer will be disabled for a period to exceed 90 days beyond the mandatory due date, the Championship Committee, with the approval of the Board of Directors, may vacate the title. The champion may seek a rule 11 exception to extend his mandatory due date if recovery from his injury or illness will extend beyond the 90 day medical extension." Tucker added that if Solis is in fact injured, the IBF expects Solis to provide medical documentation top verify his illness by September 25, 2007. He noted however that "if Solis is not injured the IBF expects him to complete his mandatory defense on or before October 25, 2007." Fernando Beltran who handles Solis had earlier informed international matchmaker Samson Lewkowicz that because of his injury doctors had asked the champion to stop training for two weeks and Beltran indicated he would be ready to defend his title against Batawang sometime in November.
