Banal Fires Up Philippine-Mexican Rivalry Against Camargo Sept. 30 PhilBoxing.com Fri, 14 Sep 2007 AJ "Bazooka" Banal fans the flame to the growing Philippine-Mexican rivalry in boxing when he takes on hard-punching Mexican Genaro “Duro” Camargo on September 30 in the main undercard of the Nietes vs Kratingdaenggym World title bout at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. Banal broke into the world ranks, and the boxing world loves him. Still undefeated in 15 fights, super flyweight AJ “Bazooka” Banal ran his campaign with much heart and fire. And when he stopped Jorge Cardenas 28 seconds in the 3rd round at the World Cup of Boxing in California, USA, last month, the world knows that there would be no stopping him. For a career spanning 2 years, the 18-year-old Banal has built an unblemished record of 14 wins, one draw, with 5 of 8 knockouts happened within the 2nd round. He has dealt first defeats and knockouts in 3 fighters along the way. One Sing Carryboy has to be retired at the start of round 7 in 2006. In 2006, he frustrated two Thai campaigns in Cebu and Bohol. Yet for just a month apart, he dropped to the canvas Dechapol Bankluaygym and Bangsaen Sithprapromt. In 2007, he dealt a technical knockout to Terdkiat Jandaeng in January. The first Indonesian who climbed the ring against him Nov 2006 left defeated in round 10. He first stepped into the world boxing arena when he defeated Mexican Juan Alberto Rosas on May 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. September 30 would be his third fiery encounter with a world-class fighter in this long battle of boxing dominance between the Philippines and Mexico. But Genaro “Duro” Camargo is a fighter that rivals the punching might of Banal. He dropped 5 of his 8 knockouts also within the 2nd round, as Banal did. Three of these knockouts came in the 1st round. Born in the town of Guasave in Sinaloa, Mexico, Camargo earlier dropped a scheduled fight with another undefeated (in 13 fights) pug Carloz Yanez of Mexico to come after Banal for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific Youth super flyweight title. Cebu Waterfront Hotel & Casino would become the venue of the Philippine-Mexican rivalry brought into the arena of the Asia Pacific boxing. Should he win the championship crown, Banal would be counting the 3rd Mexican who fell in his campaign to the world boxing belt. The heart to win the game is the fire in the fighter’s punch and the hardness to withstand the opponent’s might. |
