USYK RETAINS WBO CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE BY STOPPING MCHUNU OF S. AFRICA

Undefeated Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk stopped South African Thabiso Mchunu at 1:53 of the 9th round and successfully defended his WBO world cruiserweight title on the undercard of the Hopkins-Smith WBC International light heavyweight championship at The Forum in Inglewood, CA Saturday night. Usyk, who snatched the title from Polish Krzysztof Glowacki last September, registered his 11th win and 10th stoppages of his career while Mchunu dropped to 17-3-0, 11KOs.
Usyk was leading on all of the three judges scorecards before the time of the stoppage with judges Kermit Bayless and Jonathan Davis had it 79-72 while Levi Martinez had it 77-74, all in favor of the Ukrainian.
?I get to take my belt back home, and I got to do it with my fellow Ukrainians in the crowd,? said Oleksander Usyk. ?We were hoping to get the knock out earlier, but we got it and we?re looking forward to bringing more fights to this cruiserweight division.?
?He got the better of me, and he used it against me,? said Thabiso Mchunu. ?All I can say now is that we have to go back to square one.?
