SUICO, JACA RETAIN TITLES IN CONTRASTING FASHION! By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 25 Aug 2007 PASAY CITY--OPBF lightweight champion Randy Suico retained his title impressively, while WBO Asia Pacific superfeatherweight king Jimrex Jaca barely held on to his crown hours ago at the Mall of Asia here. Suico looked brilliant in stopping his taller Japanese foe Koji Samejima, using some head movements and a pricking jab, and scoring a knockdown in the sixth before putting away the game Samejima with a big right 2:23 gone in the eighth round. Referee Bruce McTavish did not bother to toll the count when Samejima fell like a fallen log from a big Suico right, as paramedics immediately went up the ring to help revive the challenger. He stood up after a few minutes. Jimrex Jaca, however, had to pick himself up from two knockdowns in the hands of challenger Ryu Miyagi in the opening round, before knocking down the busy-punching visitor in the same round of what was easily the night's best round. After a torrid exchange in the second, Jaca was cut by what referee Bruce McTavish described as a headbutt, and the fight had to be stopped resulting in a technical draw. In an all-action fight, Filipino Wyndel Janiola eked out a hard-fought split decision win over a very durable Hiroyuki Hisataka. Noriyuki Komatsu and Roy Doliguez figured in a technical draw after the Japanese fighter was cut in the first round. Danilo Pena prevailed on a third-round TKO over Marvin Tampus in what should be the night's best fight; Jonathan Ba-at and Eric Rapada ended up in a technical draw; Roel Laguna stopped Mervin Batolina in the opening round; Jayson Siaton TKO'd Alvin Gonzalez in the first; Ali Cali edged out Richard Donaire by unanimous decision; and Rodolfo Sumabong prevailed on a majority decision over Ronel De la Pena. The event was promoted by MP Promotions and Rex 'Wakee' Salud, and covered by Solar Sports. The event will be aired tomorrow (Sunday) at 5PM over Solar and RPN.
