2 Top Mindanao Boxers to See Action in Pacquiao-Barrera Undercard PhilBoxing.com Tue, 21 Aug 2007 Two outstanding boxers from the Southern Philippine Island of Mindanao will be seeing action in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Marco Antonio Barrera rematch set Oct. 5 in Las Vegas. Young featherweight prospect Glenn Gonzales, 22, (6 wins, 1 draw, 4 KO), currently the World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight Asia-Pacific Interim champion, and bantamweight Jundy Maraon, 22, (11 wins, 1 draw, 9 KO) will be fighting in 6 and 8 round preliminary bouts of the MP-MAB II. The inclusion of Gonzales and Maraon in the big Las Vegas card was confirmed by no less than Manny Pacquiao himself who had a meeting with the two boxers’ patron, North Cotabato Vice Governor Manny Pinol, in Cebu City Monday night (Aug. 20). Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, and Cebu boxing manager Rex Wakee Salud joined Manny Pacquiao and Manny Pinol in the meeting that finalized the listing of boxers who will see action in the big Las Vegas card. Pacquiao said it was time to give other promising boxers a chance to get a break in the lucrative boxing market of America. Gonzales, 5’7”, a former amateur standout, is a cousin of Vice Gov. Pinol and a native of M’lang, North Cotabato. He is nicknamed “Rapid Fire” because of his relentless attacking style. In his last fight, Gonzales, a southpaw, knocked out Indonesia’s Boydo Simanjuntak in the first round with a flurry of punches. The hardhitting Maraon, also a southpaw and 5’6” tall, is originally from Suminot, Zamboanga del Sur where his father is a village chief (barangay chairman). The Oct.5 fight will be the first big break for the boxers of the Braveheart Boxing Club owned by the Pinol Brothers of North Cotabato with their Chicago-based partner Rolando Hiso. Gonzales, Maraon and several other boxers from North Cotabato will move to Cebu City with their chief trainer, Vice Gov. Pinol’s younger brother, Noli, to train alongside Manny Pacquiao at Wakee Salud’s gym. “I want these boys to see how hard I train,” Pacquiao told Vice Gov. Pinol.
