GOMEZ SAYS NEVER UNDERESTIMATE PACQUIAO
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 21 Aug 2007
Eric Gomez, vice president and international matchmaker of Golden Boy Promotions cautioned people who were concerned about Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao.
Gomez pointed out “you can never underestimate Manny Pacquiao even though he is not training here in the US” in preparation for his rematch against legendary Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera in Las Vegas on October 6.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Gomez said Pacquiao “can train in a garage” and be ready to fight. Gomez said he had confidence in celebrated trainer Freddie Roach who is currently with Pacquiao who trains at the RWS gym of close friend and confidant Rex “Wakee” Salud in Cebu City.
Gomez said Roach has “done a good job with him throughout the years. He’s watched over him and Freddie is not going to let him go into a fight if he’s not a hundred percent . He knows what he’s doing and how to get him (Pacquiao) into shape.”
The Golden Boy Promotions official disclosed that Barrera is “treating this fight as the biggest fight of his career – bigger than the Naseem Hamed fight, bigger than the Erik Morales fights so you’re going to have the best Barrera ever and he’s going to be ready for this fight.” Gomez stressed that for Barrera “after this fight there’s no tomorrow.”
Barrera who was demolished in eleven rounds in their first battle in San Antonio, Texas in November 2003 has said he is out to avenge that defeat no matter what it takes.
