PACQUIAO AWAITS ROACH ARRIVAL By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 15 Aug 2007 Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao is back to the business of getting in top shape for his rematch with legendary Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on October 6. Pacquiao who arrived unexpectedly from Los Angeles over the weekend worked out for two days at the Wild Card Gym in BF Homes, Paranaque before leaving for Cebu on Tuesday evening to continue training at the new gym of close friend and confidant Rex “Wakee” Salud in Guadalupe Terrace in Cebu. Pacquiao is awaiting the arrival of celebrated trainer Freddie Roach who is scheduled to arrive aboard a Philippine Airlines flight early Thursday morning from LA along with newly crowned WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa. Roach is expected to take the first available connecting flight to Cebu to step up Pacquiao’s training. In his latest workout which lasted some two hours following early morning roadwork Pacquiao did four rounds of shadow boxing, six rounds on the punch mitts with Filipino trainer and boyhood friend Buboy Fernandez, worked on the speed ball for eight minutes, skipped rope for another eight minutes and also worked on the two-ball for some time. It's clear that if Pacquiao indeed had any personal problems he had to attend to, he’s resolved them very quickly and is now concentrating on doing what he does best and that is to virtually kill himself in the gym in preparation for his next big fight against Barrera. As Roach himself has often repeated, “when Manny steps into the gym he is the finest athlete in the world” primarily because he works so hard and is dedicated to what he does. Viva Sports/Manila Standard also learned that Pacquiao was in bed by 11 p.m. on Tuesday after his arrival in Cebu. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
