ALL?S WELL THAT ENDS WELL FOR CONDES By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 15 Aug 2007 After hours of sometimes heated exchanges over two days and three meetings the controversy surrounding IBF minimum weight champion Florante Condes? managerial and promotional contracts were finally resolved through the efforts of Games and Amusements chairman Eric Buhain. In the end Condes was paid the $9,500 promised him by promoters Cezar Trevino and Bobby Bostick and as Buhain noted ?Florante is happy. He is contented.? The trouble began when Condes? Filipino manager Aljoe Jaro and co-manager in the US,Dante Ortiz, clashed over commitments that were allegedly not kept, resulting in verbal exchanges behind closed doors that resulted in Aljoe Jaro, a former boxer, angrily storming out. But in the end Buhain did a yeoman?s job and with the far more moderate posture of Trevino ?threshed out their differences? and sorted things out. Condes who sat in on the final round of discussions before Trevino, Ortiz and former world champion Morris East caught a flight to the US said he was ?stunned? by what transpired and wondered whether he was in boxing. Condes added ?everything is okay now and I will start training tomorrow. No matter what I am always in condition.? Aljoe Jaro and Trevino hugged each other when it was over and said both of them were concerned about what was best for the future of Condes. Aljoe Jaro said they requested Trevino ?to have the first title defense staged in the Philippines this October and that the promoters make a quick decision so they could move to get the title defense plans in place.? The Filipino manager said his first impulse was not to accept the $9,500 for Condes, to return the $20,000 paid him by Ortiz for being signed up as co-manager and to rescind the contract . Aljoe Jaro said Trevino was ?okay but Ortiz was like a broken down tape going back all the time and that?s why I lost my cool so I apologized to chairman Buhain because we were in his office. Ortiz was wrong. He didn?t do the right thing.? But in the end Aljoe Jaro said ?our talks with Cezar (Trevino) were fine and everything is now okay.? Trevino said that after the somewhat strong statements issued by both sides they wanted to ?spread the good news that we were able to visit with Condes and make sure he got his money. We were able to work things out with Aljoe and go forward with everything we have in mind and take into consideration Condes? request to have his first fight here in the Philippines. We?ll have to find out whether that?s the best thing and that?s in his best interests.? Trevino added ?when we sat down we just shook hands and gave each other a hug and said lets do what?s right for Condes.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
