BANAL TO FACE CARDENAS IN 'WORLD CUP'
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 10 Aug 2007
Banal (L) takes on Cardenas (R).
SACRAMENTO--Unbeaten southpaw AJ 'Bazooka' Banal will face a new opponent in Jorge Cardenas in a six-round bout in one of the undercards of this Saturday's (Sunda in RP) World Cup of Boxing straight from the Arco Arena here.
According to international matchmaker Sampson 'Picasso' Lewkowicz, Cardenas hails from Los Mochis, Mexico and has a record of 9 wins, 3 losses and 3 draw with 6 KO's, and should give the unbeaten Banal a tough bout.
Both Banal and Cardenas will receive a special watch worth $5,000 each (roughly P225,000) as part of the sponsorship package presented by Icelink Watch, a major sponsor to the event who also crafted the diamond-laced World Cup.
All the other fighters seeing action in the card are also assured of receiving their $5,000 watches.
"I would like to thank Golden Boy Promotions for including me in this event, and I would like to ask the support of all the Filipinos in this event. We prepared very hard for this fight, and we are determined to win," Banal told the media at yesterday's official press conference held at the Arco Arena and hosted by Golden Boy Oscar De la Hoya.
Today's weigh-in is set at the Arden Mall here starting at 4PM, with Banal and the rest of the Filipino fighters expected to make weight easily.
