VARGAS-SALIDO FULL FIGHT CARD RESULTS FROM THE STUBHUB (PHOTOS)

PhilBoxing.com

Vargas and Salido duke it out.

Carson CA:- What maybe a great candidate for fight of the year happened Saturday night at the StubHub Center in this city. It featured a phone booth style slugfest, "hit me and I will hit you back" style of a fight involving two Mexican gladiators that appeared to have no reverse gear.

After 12 really hard fought rounds that left both fighters nearly spent, the judges could not decide the winner between Francisco Vargas (23-0-2, 17KO) and Orlando Salido (42-13-4, 30KO). In their ultimate wisdom, they decided that the fight was a split draw allowing Vargas to keep his crown. The scores were 114-114, 114-114, and 115-113 (Vargas). The fight was for the WBC Super featherweight title held by Vargas.

In the supporting main event, two undefeated featherweights, Abraham Lopez (21-0-1, 5KO) and Julian Ramirez (16-1-0, 8KO) fought for the NABA title. It was a back and forth affair. An accidental head butt in round 6 opened a cut near the right eye of Ramirez that affected him during the fight. In the end, the fight was won by Lopez with the scores being 97-93, 98-92, 97-93 giving him a unanimous decision.

In a ten round featured fight, Gabriel Rosado (23-9-0, 13KO) appeared to have been gifted an early Christmas with a widely booed and unpopular decision over Antonio Gutierrez (21-1-1, 9KO). Gutierrez dropped Rosado with a nicely deliver one-two combination in Round 4 and was more aggressive than Rosado who spent most of the night on his bike going backwards. Judges scores were 95-94, 96-93, 95-94 all for the ?house fighter?, Gabriel Rosado.

In an uneven fight before it was even made, legitimate lightweight (135lbs) and rising Golden Boy star Christian Gonzales (14-0-0, 12KO) threw everything he had but could not finish a very brave super bantamweight (122lbs) slugger from Lipa City Philippines, Jhon Gemino ((12-7-1, 5KO). Gonzalez in his attempt to drop the Filipino often times forgot his defense and suffered a nearly closed left eye from the counterpunches of the diminutive Filipino. Being taller by almost five inches and having longer reach, Gonzalez pressed the action and landed what appeared to be harder punches but Gemino made him pay in return. Had the weights been even, who knows what Gemino could have done to Gonzalez. The scores were 80-72, 80-72 and 79-71.

Young Nick Arce (8-0-0-, 6KO) another rising Golden Boy prospect won a lazy UD over Francisco Dominguez (8-10-0, 2KO). Arce a super featherweight, could not do much against Dominguez and just appeared to be happy fighting from a distance. The scores of the fight were all 60-54 for Arce.

Jonathon Navarro (6-0-0, 5KO) scored a knockout victory over a greatly overmatched opponent in Marc Torres (4-2-0, 1KO). Navarro dropped Torres in Round 1 with body shots and again in the second round with a couple of well placed uppercuts. Torres was counted out at 1:21 of the round. From the standpoint of the pundits that were with us up in the press box, Navarro?s victory was good for him but it was sad that he had to get it against a lowly over-matched opponent.

In the ?now its time to go to the beer line? kind of a fight, Alexis Rocha (3-0-0, 2KO) won an almost non-fight against Anthony Woods (0-0-5, 0KO). Judges scores were all 40-36.

Genaro Gamez (2-0-0,2KO) stopped Juan Bryand (1-4-0,0KO) at 1:36 of Round 1.

In the curtain raiser, Oscar Duarte (5-0-0,2KO) dropped Luis Lizarraga (5-9-1, 2KO) late in the final round. Only the bell save Lizarraga from further punished as the fight end. Scores were all 40-35 for Duarte.
