FLORES AND FRANCISCO SUCESSFULLY DEFEND TITLES

PhilBoxing.com

PARANAQUE CITY -- In contrasting ways of winning, both WBO InterCon Light flyweight Champion Rexon Flores and WBO ASPAC Flyweight Champion Drian Francisco successfully defended their titles against Thai opponents last night in the “Bakbakan sa Elorde” boxing event in the Elorde Sports Center in Para?aque, City.

In the first of the double header main event, WBO InterCon Light flyweight Champion Rexon Flores defeated WBO #2 InterCon Light flyweight contender Terdkiet Jundaeng by a unanimous decision. Flores dominated the fight and won almost every round. He scored big by landing body shots. Good exchanges were seen from both fighters. In the 1st round both fighters clashed heads. Fortunately it didn’t cause any cut on both fighters who both reacted signifying pain after the clash. Two judges saw it 118 – 110 and 119 – 112 for the third.

When the referee reached the count of 10, it was all over for the floored WBO ASPAC No.1 Flyweight contender Wanmeechok Singwangcha, courtesy of a left uppercut to the upper abdomen by champion Drian Francisco. The fight was stopped at 2’16’’ in the 1st as the challenger failed to recover and was still grimacing in pain well beyond ten counts. He was immediately attended to by the ring physician and assisted to his corner.

The preliminary bouts featured 3 fights. The first was the 6-round fight between Salvador Ronquillo and Rene Nival in the junior flyweight division. Nival was clearly not in shape as Ronquillo dominated the fight. Nival was so weak in the last few rounds that he kept falling to the floor either from fatigue or because of the slippery floor, Ronquillo rained punches on Nival without response prompting the referee to stop the contest midway in the 6th round.

Raymond Sermona dominated opponent Roberto Moreno and showed him the true meaning of raw power in their 8-round fight in their 120-lb fight. It was “raw” for this writer because Sermona’s attacks we’re not only predictable but it came mainly from his right. Had Sermona used combinations, strong jabs, hooks, and uppercuts, Moreno probably wouldn’t have lasted the second round. It was a TKO win for Sermona as the referee stopped the fight at 1’59’’ in the 4th. Moreno fell down for an 8-count early in the 4th and was clearly defenseless from the onslaught of powerful rights thrown by Sermona as the fight resumed until the fight was mercifully stopped.

The last was a 10round fight between Jayson Egera and Charlie Angel in the 122-lb division. This fight was held after the main event because GAB officials did not allow Angel to fight because he was given a 14-oz glove by the promoter who failed to provide a 10-oz pair earlier. This was also the problem in the first professional fight of the night.

Angel was overweight by 3-lbs for which reason he was assigned a 10-oz glove and ordered to pay 10% of his earnings to his opponent.

Their fight, however, delighted the crowd. Both threw hard punches but more from Egera. Egera almost fell in the 4th but held on to the ropes from a hard left-right counter to the body and face. He threw more effective punches hurting Angel in the 2nd and in the last few seconds in the 4th. After the 4th, it was Egera all the way. In the last round, Egera increased the pressure with left-right combinations leaving Angel unable to fight back. The referee stepped in and stopped the fight with 57” left awarding Egera a TKO win.

Other Results:

Geremie Tabastabas drawed with stable mate Marnelle Verano in their 4round 112-lb division special women’s fight. Verano scored the early rounds but was however held back by a broken hand. The fight ended in a majority draw as one judge saw it 39 – 37 for Verano and 38 – 38 by the other two.

It was also a majority draw for Fidel V. Ramos and his opponent Marlon Piculados in their 4-round fight in the junior flyweight division. Piculados landed more punches in the 1st as he was rewarded a 39 – 37 score by a judge. The other two saw the fight at 38 – 38 and 39 – 39.

Joey Balmes defeated BJ Dolorosa by a majority decision in their junior flyweight fight. The scores were 38 – 38 and 38 – 37 twice for Balmes.

JP Otilla won by split decision over Bembem Placidas. Two judges scored the fight 38-37 for Otilla while the other had the same score but for Placidas.
