GORRES WILL FIGHT IF CLEARED BY EYE SPECIALIST

PhilBoxing.com

Z “The Dream” Gorres will go ahead with his IBF super flyweight eliminator against Gerson Guerrero in the Philippines-Mexico World Cup on August 11 if eye specialist Dr. Steven Steinschriber checks him out and finds that the tiny tear in his retina has healed.

The tear was discovered during a routine medical checkup for the Filipino boxers deep in training for the classic showdown at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California. Dr. Steinschriber subsequently performed laser surgery to correct the tear and said that the flashy southpaw may still be able to fight depending on his checkup on August 6.

The laser treatment was supposed to protect the eye and cure it within 16 days.

Respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that he had a long overeas telephone conversation with Gorres and all the other ALA boys on the fight card and Gorres told him “I really want to fight.” Gorres said he has continued training even after the initial medical report where his clearance to fight was withheld and that he was in great shape.

Gorres who is known for his excellent defense and ability to quickly maneuver himself out of harms way in the ring jokingly told Aldeguer he will make sure that he wont get hit especially on that eye.

Aldeguer himself said he had made up his mind to allow Gorres to fight “provided the specialist clears him” on August 6. However, he did indicate that it would also depend on Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez and international matchmaker Samson Lewkowicz since the World Cup was a Golden Boy event in conjunction with the ALA Gym.

A report from Los Angeles revealed that Diosdado Gabi whose name was floated as a possible replacement for Gorres was not in condition and in fact had reportedly ballooned to 122 pounds.

At the same time a suggestion that veteran Vernie Torres replace Gorres was scoffed at by Filipino boxing writers and fight fans who said Torres had long past his prime and fighting Guerrero would be like giving the Mexicans a 1-0 lead even before the World Cup begins.

The team that wins the most number of fights wins the $500,000 World Cup which is studded with tiny diamonds, rubies, sapphires and other precious stones and will retain the trophy for good only if the country wins three times in a row. The Mexicans defeated Thailand 5-1 in the inaugural staging of the event.
