SOLAR ECLIPSE By Dennis Principe PhilBoxing.com Fri, 20 Jul 2007 Before I begin, allow me to thank and commend Solar Sports network for bringing to our homes nearly all of boxing's biggest fights, local and international, the past couple of years. For a grateful human being, it pains me to chide, even for a moment, Solar Sports despite all the sacrifices and efforts they've been doing to give us the best boxing coverage. Right now, I cannot help but feel bad about Solar's decision to show the replay of Nonito Donaire's recent world title conquest exactly the same time ABS-CBN will beam the live feed of another Filipino world title challenger this weekend. 10AM this Sunday, Solar Sports, in partnership with GMA-7, will air Donaire's hard to miss 5th round knockout win over Vic Darchinyan, while ABS-CBN will show the 12-round world lightweight title challenge of Tabgilaran's pride Czar Amonsot versus Michael Katsidis of Australia. In mincing no words about the ugly clash, it is, in all likelihood, motivated by another prospect of proving which network is the better network for events like this. Healthy competition? We always welcome that. But for this particular situation, I don't think it’s healthy. The biggest loser in this collision are, first and foremost the Filipino boxing fans. Then, in my opinion, Donaire himself. Why Donaire? Well, don't you all think he will look laughable this Sunday considering that he is scheduled to work as guest analyst for ABS-CBN's coverage while his own fight is being shown on a rival channel? Is that how they honor our own world champion who risked his life and limb just for us to have something to cheer about? Not enough time in school is probably their only drawback in expressing their utmost desire in words to be at the forefront in telling the whole world that our country is always a safe destination. I always admire the so-called battle of TV networks as this will result in quality shows. But for this particular battle? Methinks it's a disfavor to us Filipinos. Here’s wishing they show respect to our boxers who, as I've said, are risking their lives to make us proud. They are not like actors who thrive in being talked about through illicit affairs and nonsense scandals. It’s unfair to compare their fights with crappy sitcoms or monotonous telenovelas that are inadvertently harming the moral fiber of our society. Manny Pacquiao, Rey Bautista, Z Gorres, Florante Condes, Donaire and a slew of ring warriors, all of them are our pride, bar none. In this sport, boxers are our ambassadors to the world. These champions are our real-life heroes. For this reason, they deserve some respect. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Dennis Principe. |
