ORTIZ SURE CONDES WILL BE NEW WORLD CHAMPION

The co-manager of Filipino minimum weight Florante Condes who battles reigning IBF champion Muhammad Rachman in a mandatory title fight in Jakarta on Saturday says “I’m sure the 'Lion from Manila' (as Condes is called) will be the next Filipino world champion.”

Filipino co-manager Aljoe Jaro, a former fighter said he is confident Condes will catch the champion in three or four rounds and after that “it will be over.”

Ortiz, in an email to Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today said that he had signed a contract with Condes’ promoter Bobby Bostick and his partner Trevino Boxing Promotions. The agreement guaranteed Condes a purse of $9,500. Ortiz said Cezar Trevino who will be in Jakarta with the Florida State team to “give support to Condes” will pay him on the day of the fight” although he suggested to Aljoe Jaro that he collect Condes’ purse right after the weigh in.

Ortiz revealed that with the additional $3,000 from the Indonesian promoter, the purse of Condes will eventually amount to $12,500. However, he also said that besides himself and Aljoe Jaro who will be entitled to their share of the purse former world champion Morris East was also expected to get a share as listed trainer in the contract signed in “the kitchen of Aljoe Jaro’s home in Binangonan” on September 16, 2006.

Ortiz also cautioned Aljoe Jaro to be “alert after the fight because anything can happen in Indonesia because without Rachman being a champion they (Indonesian promoters) can disappear.”

In a word of advice to Condes, Ortiz said “Florante should always go forward with combination punches during the fight and not step back even one inch.” He also advised Condes not to look for “a one-punch knockout and to always have his hands up to protect his jaw.”

Earlier reports from Jakarta revealed that the 35 year old champion was training hard and running in the sand to be in top shape for the fight but Aljoe Jaro was confident that Rachman could run for a few rounds but that sooner or later Condes who is regarded as a devastating puncher in the mould of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao would nail him. The manager told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that Rachman “can run for three or four rounds but then Condes will catch him and it will be all over.”

Condes earned the mandatory title shot for being the available contender following indications that none of the top fighters were willing to travel to Jakarta to fight Rachman because of alleged hometown decisions. In his last title defense against Filipino Benjie Sorolla on December 23 last year the fight was stopped in the seventh round and Rachman was awarded a TKO win which was vehemently protested by Sorolla’s manager Marty Elorde who claimed the stoppage was premature. But even Elorde’s appeal to the IBF didn’t work.
