PhilBoxing.com

TEAM Pacman-Labangal of General Santos City continued its winning ways in the quarterfinals even as Pres. Roxas of North Cotabato also earned two slots into the semifinals of the 3rd Manny Pacquiao Sports Challenge Mindanao Open Amateur Boxing tournament Saturday at the Robinson?s Place in Gensan.

Pacman?s Lue Jay Tumandan won by a split decision against Sarangani?s Joel Codaste in the school boy?s mosquito division (38-40 kg.). He will next face Cagayan de Oro?s Mark Lester Durenz, who eliminated Backyard Region 12?s Jomel Brillo by a unanimous decision.

Arjay Recopelacion of Pacman also advanced into the semifinals by trouncing Iligan?s Briz Bryan Bado by a UD in the junior boy?s pinweight division (44-46 kg.).

Recopelacion will next fight Backyard?s Harley Davidson Tumando, who stopped Malungon?s Jolly Canete by a technical knockout in 1:53 of the first round.

The other semifinal match pits CDO?s Paul John Estremos and Roxas? Rico Antonio, who ousted Davao?s Joshua Padual and Sarangani?s Jemar Bolonquina respectively on points.

Ederfil Gepolani, another fighter of Pres. Roxas coach Ramil Ovalo, also advanced in the semis after a split over Davao?s Cyril Ivan Revilla in the 38-40 kg. His next opponent is Malungon?s Bobby Cinco who whipped Gensan?s Renante Gempayan by UD.

Meanwhile, event coordinator Sannie Sombrio clarified that their annual event is organized by the Manny Pacquiao Sports Association (MPSA) and it is not sanctioned by the Association of Boxing Alliance in the Phils. (ABAP).

?We have our own pool of referees here because MPSA is not sanctioned by ABAP,?said Sombrio.

Boxing is one of the 11 sports events of the MPSC that is supported by the city government of Gensan in coordination with the City Sports and Games Division. The finals and awarding will be held on Dec. 8.

The other events, however, are participated by the government employees and elected officials of the 12 local government units from Mindanao.

The formal opening program was held Saturday at the Lagao gym with Rep. Pacquiao declaring the games open. City Mayor Ronnel Rivera gave the welcome remarks while Sarangani Gov. Steve Solon led the oath of sportsmanship. ? LITO DELOS REYES
