ALABANG BOXING EVENT ENDS WITHOUT A “BANG”

PhilBoxing.com

Tempers rose and the crowd constantly booed as they were treated to a somewhat colorful second main event match between LUZPROBA No. 2 Junior Flyweight contender Celso Danggod and Mario De Asis in the “Bakbakan sa Alabang VI” held last night at the Municipal Covered Court in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, Philippines.

Both boxers engaged in a slippery, dirty, and unsportsmanlike way of fighting. Not a surprise to this writer though. Here’s why:

It’s Mario De Asis - pure and simple. He’s a boxer known for his dirty style of fighting and crazy antics inside the ring. Slippery because both fighters slipped and fell at most 5 times every round. Not to mention each fighter pushing or shoving his opponent to the canvas. Oftentimes, both slipped one after the other.

A point was deducted to De Asis in the 2nd round as both fighters clashed heads resulting to a cut to the left forehead of Danggod. Things started to heat up between the two when Danggod, out of frustration from De Asis’ antics, wrestled his opponent down and they both fell. De Asis was warned in the 4th for an attempted head butt. He was later deducted a point by the referee.

If it had not been for the strict officiating by the referee, things would’ve gone out of control as De Asis was again deducted a point in the 7th for another head butt. Danggod’s frustration could be seen clearly as he was forced to fight De Asis’ dirty way of fighting. The judges scored it 95 – 91, 96 – 89, 98 – 91 for Danggod.

The first main event match featured 10-rounds of boxing between Jason Egera and Jun Magsipoc in the 122-lb division.

Egera clearly dominated every round and won by a Unanimous Decision as two judges scored it 100 – 88, while another saw it 100 – 89. Egera was relentless in his attacks, landing power shots that hurt Magsipoc in every round.

Magsipoc bleed in the nose starting in the 2nd round and the bleeding caused him much difficulty in breathing. Magsipoc hit the canvass in the 5th and also in the last round. He was however warned in the 9th round for a low blow.

The preliminary event featured two 8-rounders in the 120-lb and 108-lb weight levels.

The fight between Jongjong Gaganti and Raymond Sermona’s ended in a split draw. Both fighters weighed in at 119lbs.

In the 1st round, Gaganti managed to hurt Sermona by a wallop to the right side of the head. Sermona almost fall. Gaganti dominated the 4th and was on the attack using strength he’s been saving up from the 2nd and 3rd rounds where few exchanges were seen from both fighters.

Sermona managed to hurt Gaganti late in the 7th by a hard punch to the stomach. It was followed up by more solid body shots but Gaganti got saved by the bell. He was later warned in the last round for a low blow. The scores were 78 – 76 for Sermona, 78 – 75 for Gaganti, while the third scored it 76 – 76.

Geno Quilitar came up short as he lost by Unanimous Decision to Warlito Parrenas in their 108-lb 4-round match. Good exchanges between the fighters were made in the first two rounds. Quilitar, however, got tired in the 3rd as Parrenas started to dominate every round with his superior skills.

Other results:

At the 6-round super-flyweight division, Mark Saloma won by a unanimous decision over opponent Sylvester Lopez. Saloma did enough and managed to hurt Lopez in every round. Saloma almost got knocked down in the 1st. The scores were 58-56, 60-55 and 60-57.

Agapito Bolima landed more solid punches in every round against opponent Japeth Martin in their 6-round fight in the 126-lb division. Martin got hurt a lot of times and almost fall down in the last round from a series of uppercuts to his head and body. Scores were 58 – 56 and 59 – 56 for Bolima while the third judge saw it at 57 – 57.

A TKO win was rewarded to Ronelle Ferreras as he made sure opponent Alvin Cruel hit the canvass once in every round in their 6-round fight in the minimum weight division. The referee stopped the fight at 2’36’’ of the 5th round as Cruel was unable to fight back from Ferreras’s barrage of punches.

The old one-two combination was all Marnelle Verano needed to dispose of opponent Babay Teckok and win by unanimous decision their 4-round 105-lb division ‘special attraction’ women’s match. Teckok got knocked down in the first by a hard right to the chin. Two judges scored it 40 – 35 while the third scored it 40 – 36.
