FILIPINO CORNERMAN ESCAPES IN JAPAN! By Joe Koizumi PhilBoxing.com Fri, 29 Jun 2007 OSAKA, JAPAN--WBC#4 ranked OPBF light-fly champ Juanito Rubillar (42-10-7, 18 KOs), 108, a Filipino southpaw, impressively kept his regional belt by dispatching Japanese challenger Ken Nakajima (16-5, 10 KOs), 108, with a wicked body shot at 2:42 of the fifth round on Sunday (June 24) in Osaka, Japan. On the next day a Filipino cornerman escaped prior to Rubillar group's departure from Japan to Manila . The promoter Takanobu Totsuka filed this case to the Japanese Police office for his expectedly illegal overstay and illegal work here in Japan . Such a runaway is called 'TNT' in the Philippines , and Japanese promoters and matchmakers are afraid of TNT cases happening in the future as often as previously. The Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) makes it a rule to issue its letter of guarantee for foreign boxers or boxing people to take visas to enter this country and stay here until after the fights. It means that they are granted the visas under the condition that they are obliged to leave Japan just after their boxing activities. It is said that, because of the difference of the currency values between Japan and the Philippines, if a Filipino person should illegally overstay and work here for three years with sending his salary to his family, he will be able to build a house because his salary will greatly balloon in local currency. It has become a social problem here that many illegal foreign workers exploit Japanese workers' jobs. Some years ago many Filipino trainers or cornermen escaped for illegal work after fights, so the JBC inevitably made a strict decision to ban any Filipino boxers from fighting in Japan for a year. The JBC and the GAB (Games and Amusements Board; the local commission of the Philippines ) then reached an agreement that only the GAB-ranked boxers shall be allowed to fight in Japan to avoid such TNT cases in the future. Since then, no TNT happened after the ban was cleared. There had been a goodwill move by Japanese matchmakers to ask the JBC to consider permitting even unranked Filipino boxers (8-round or 6-round boys) to fight in Japan, but this TNT case in Osaka mercilessly destroyed such a possibility. The police investigation may extend to Rubillar and his manager who already returned to Manila . Click here to view a list of other articles written by Joe Koizumi. |
