BERNARD QUIRINO - THE EMBODIMENT OF A TRUE PINOY BOXING FAN

PhilBoxing.com

The recently concluded PinoyPride33, a promotion of the famed ALA Boxing International in cooperation with the giant Philippine TV group, ABS-CBN and The Filipino Channel (TFC) held at the iconic StubHub Center in Carson, California was not only a great success. It showcased a few goodies that merit a mention in writing for prosperity?s sake.

a. The obvious ? it was an historic event simply by being the very first boxing promotions in the USA wholly put together by Filipino companies. No other Asian group has done that before let alone achieved the success many thought would be very difficult to attain.

b. It showcased the true ?bayanihan? spirit Filipinos are famous for. Many folks that were not on the payroll of the three companies putting the event together came to help to ensure success of the event. Their silent participation on a few occasions were what tipped the balance from the ?make or break? of the event. These folks are the true boxing fans that gave their own time, money and efforts without expecting any remuneration.

c. The event proved the tenacity of Filipinos when faced with a ?very difficult task?. Those who grind out the implementation of details unconsciously proved that famous saying ?There is no such thing as impossible, the impossible only takes longer to achieve?.

d. The fans- up to the last minute, many where skeptic about supporting an event that never had a precedent in the SoCal area before and those who were not where those spoiled by the overly generous acts of Manny Pacquiao who provided free tickets in all his fights. These two groups are the ones that need to be educated about the fight game. I have no doubt however, with what they have read about the success of the PinoyPride33 in many media outlets, the next time around they will come and give their support.

But still there were a good number of others who were simply fans of anything Filipino.

These were the ones that came in droves at the StubHub last Saturday. It would not be too far fetch to say that over a good three thousand of them came. That in it self is truly amazing. These folks at the very least deserved a huge ?thank you?.

Then there is the exception. The epitome of true Filipino boxing fans aptly represented by a gentleman from New York, Bernardo Quirino. Quirino is retired US serviceman and a great boxing fan. He is also a follower of this site, philboxing.com.

Quirino had a hard choice to make. Stay in New York and watch GGG-Lemieux/Gonzalez-Viloria or fly to Los Angeles for PinoyPride33. To him it was a no brainer. He picked to fly to LA and support a pure Filipino event. On top of that, he brought his wife along.

Needless to say, he had a blast at the fight. And, as an icing on the cake, he got to shake hands and had photos taken with ALA President and CEO, Michael Aldeguer and the top honchos from ABS-CBN and TFC.
