OCTOBER IS FILLED UP WITH EXCITING FIGHTS; PINOY PRIDE AND BAYANIHAN SPIRIT

PhilBoxing.com

After a relatively quiet August and September, the boxing world once again will start to see great fights in October. The past two months were mostly quiet save from the giant of all snoozers, the Floyd Mayweather, Jr., sparring session on PPV versus Andre Berto. Just to show how boring it was, it reportedly made less than 500T buys, surely a red ink biggie for Showtime. Had it not been for the phone booth style fight between Orlando Salido and Rocky Martinez in the undercard, the whole promotions would have been a total flop.

October however will change all of that a great deal. For a start, HBO ?Boxing After Dark? on October 3rd will present a battle between Argentinean slugger Lucas Matthysee (37-3-0, 34K0) against Victor Postol (27-0-0,11KO) of Kiev, Ukraine for the WBC World Super Lightweight belt, back up by a projected barn burner of a fight between ageless Humberto Soto (65-8-2, 35) of Los Mochis, MX and Antonio Orozco (22-0-0,15KO) of San Diego, CA. The fight will be at the StubHub Center in Carson.

For an appetizer, the day before the Matthysee-Postol fights, Golden Boy Promotions will be putting up its monthly LA FightClub card at the Belasco Theater in downtown LA featuring emerging stars headed by Brazilian contender, Patrick Teixeira (25-0-0,21KO) against Gabriel Martinez (28-10-1,15KO) of Emplame, Sonora, MX. The fight will be seen live on Boxeo Estelar and streamed on Ring TV.

Then on October 17th, HBO will move to New York at the famed MSG to host the fight between Gennady Golovkin (33-0-0, 30 KO) of Los Angeles via Karaganda, Kazakhstan versus David Lemieux (34-2-0,31KO) of Montreal, Canada. The fight will be for the IBF and IBO World Middleweight belt, WBC World Middleweight interim belt, and the WBA Super World Middleweight title.

This fight is drawing interest because Golovkin who is undefeated is a prospective opponent of Mayweather Jr., when Mayweather decides to un-retire again next year. Should that fail to happen, Golovkin is also being groomed for Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico, if Cotto, as expected gets past Canelo Alvarez in November.

For some reason or another, Pinoy Pride 33 was scheduled on the same day as the Golovkin ?Lemieux fight. But the grandeur of the New York fight does not seem to bother ALA CEO Michael Aldeguer mainly because the ALA fight card is in California, Stub Hub specifically. ?This happen every time in boxing, fight cards happening on the same day, sometimes in different cities, sometimes in the same city,? he stated

Besides, they are apparently targeting a different audience, the Filipinos and the Latinos mostly the Mexicans, in the greater LA area. The Pinoy Pride 33 will be shown all over the world where ABS-CBN and TFC are available, notably in the Middle East where OFW are present in large numbers. These OFW are proven supporters of Filipino fighters and will no doubt buy the fight in huge numbers.

But for Pinoy Pride 33 to have a whale of an inaugural event in the State, Filipinos in SoCal must show their support in great numbers. We say this because the first ever Filipino promoted fight card in the US is not only about Filipino promoters, sponsors and boxers.

Pinoy Pride 33 is about everything that is Filipino.

It?s about how Filipinos can put up business and entertainment endeavors in the US back up solely by their own financial resources, and their organizational know-how;

It?s about how Filipinos in return will back up such endeavors even if it means sacrificing some of their time and resources.

And certainly, it?s about showing our spirit of bayanihan - giving each other a hand.

With that we, who are involve so closely with boxing implore all Filipinos to show the world that we can support everything that is Filipino.

The Mexicans I am sure will be out in force at Stub Hub to support their boxers on October 17th.

We should do the same as well and show the world that we are not only quasi-boxing fans who will only flock to a venue if tickets are free or if we can advance our personal goals much like when Manny Pacquiao fights in the US.

Pinoy Pride 33 is Filipino. It is us!
