PACQUIAO RECEIVES BWAA 'FIGHTER OF THE YEAR' AWARD; CALZAGHE A NO-SHOW
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sat, 09 Jun 2007

LOS ANGELES -- The Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) awards dinner according to reports coming out of the Copacabana in New York was aS good as it was hyped except that the main awards presenter was a no-show.
Joe Calzaghe of the Great Britain, the longest reigning boxing title holder in any division did not show up to do the honor of presenting the “Boxer of the Year Award" to Manny Pacquiao.
But the absence of one star presenter allowed another who is a star in his own right to take his place and allowed the show to go on.
Jake Lamotta, the ex-world middleweight champion taking the place of Joe Calzaghe, presented the beautiful BWAA Plaque to Manny Pacquiao.

Jake Lamotta is the famous Bronx, New York slugger who holds the distinction of being the first person to beat Sugar Ray Robinson in his 41 fight career. In 1980, a movie about his life was made by Martin Scorcese with Robert de Niro playing the role of Lamotta. The movie was called the “Raging Bull”.
Pacquiao was chosen as BWAA '2006 Fighter of the Year' for his thrilling knockout wins against Mexican legend Erik Morales in January and November last year both in Las Vegas sandwiched by a dominating decision win against former world champion and another Mexican Oscar Larios in July in the Philippines.
